New B.S. Programs for Fall 2015
March 5, 2015
The Department of Geological Sciences is launching completely re-designed Bachelor of Science
programs in Fall 2015. The B.S. degree will include two options: Geology and Geophysics. We are
proud of the strong tradition of rigorous courses and training that CSUN Geology provides, and we
are dedicated to serving academic and professional needs of geoscience students now and in the

Richard Squires Wins the 2014 Gilbert N. Harris Award
October 9, 2014
Richard Squires has been named as the winner of the 2014 Gilbert N. Harris award. This award is
given annually by the Paleontological Research Institution in recognition of excellence in
contributions to systematic paleontology to a scientist who has made outstanding contributions to the

Geology Goes Hollywood: New online GE class a success!
September 1, 2014
This semester, the department ushered in a new 'born digital' GE course with the fully online lecture
and lab, GEOL 107. Hooked in by watching popular Hollywood disaster movies, students
constructed a dinosaur based on a small sampling of bones, played the role of residents in Mammoth
Lakes in the middle of a volcanic crisis, designed their own earthquake early warning network, and
debated the risks and rewards of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas. Course design by Drs. Schwartz
and d'Alessio was supported by the CSU Chancellor's office, and you can read their report on

FFF2014 Santa Rosa Island
August 25, 2014
For the 2014 Fall Field Frolic we went to Santa Rosa Island. After gathering in the CSUN parking
lot we headed to Ventura harbor where we boarded an Island Packers boat and set out to sea. We had
smooth sailing and in route we saw whales, dolphins, jellyfish, seals, and other assorted sea life. We
also witnessed some great exposures of the geologic strata on the south side of Santa Cruz Island.

Dr. Gene Fritsche Commemorative Geology Hike
October 12, 2013
On Saturday, October 12, 2013, forty-nine fans of Dr. A. Eugene Fritsche gathered for a hike and
picnic in Topanga State Park to honor the memory of Gene Fritsche and celebrate his lasting
influence on our lives. Read more
