David Savran is Distinguished Professor of Theatre and Vera Mowry Roberts Chair in American
Theatre, CUNY Graduate Center and Editor of the Journal of American Drama and Theatre. His
books include A Queer Sort of Materialism: Recontextualizing American Theater (Michigan,
2003); The Masculinity Studies Reader (Wiley-Blackwell, 2002); The Playwright’s Voice (TCG,
1999); Taking It Like a Man: White Masculinity, Masochism, and Contemporary American
