NZQA Māori Qualifications Services (MQS) has completed the revision of the unit
standards listed above. The standards were revised as a result of the domains referred to
above being included in the Base Scope of Assessment for Schools (BSAS).

Summary
At a meeting held in November 2010, the Whakaruruhau Matua supported the inclusion of
all the Level 1-3 Field Māori unit standards to be listed on the BSAS. This would address
the issue of low usage of Field Māori in the secondary sector and enable access for
rangatahi Māori in schools.
With the review of standards and qualifications in Field Māori, the Whakaruruhau had
identified that in the process of the protection and maintenance of mātauranga Māori,
barriers were created. These barriers have impacted on building the capability skills and
knowledge young Māori need to elevate their participation in becoming the leaders of
tomorrow within their own whānau, hapū iwi and community.
The table above also shows the standards in the domains for the level specified when
inclusion on the BSAS was approved. This means that all schools with BSAS consent to
assess will automatically have their consent to assess scope extended to the domains
referred to above to Level 3.
