This unit standard is for people in the hairdressing industry
wishing to gain knowledge of hair and scalp conditions.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of: contagious conditions of the scalp; noncontagious conditions of the scalp; and hairshaft conditions.

Definition
Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and Health (Hairdressers) Regulations 1980.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of contagious conditions of the scalp.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Contagious conditions of the skin and scalp are described in terms of type,
cause, signs, and treatment advice.

contagious conditions must include but are not limited to –
impetigo, folliculitis, pediculosis capitis, and may include – tinea
capitis;
cause must include but is not limited to – the way the condition is
spread;
treatment advice includes – when to seek medical advice.
1.2
Essential health precautions needed to prevent spread of contagious conditions
are described.
1.3
The sanitising of contaminated equipment is described.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of non-contagious conditions of the scalp.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Non-contagious conditions of the scalp are described in terms of type, cause,
signs, and treatment advice.
Range
non-contagious conditions must include but are not limited to –
psoriasis, alopecia areata (including alopecia totalis and alopecia
universalis), androgenic alopecia in men and women, diffuse hair
loss, seborrehea, seborrheic dermatitis, sebaceous cyst, pityriasis
simplex, trichotillomania, cicatricial and traction alopecia;
treatment advice includes – when to seek medical advice.
2.2
Skin irregularities that may indicate the presence of malignant growths are
identified and described.
2.3
The manner for bringing to the client’s attention skin irregularities that may
indicate the presence of malignant growths is described.
