Strategic purpose statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide those new to, and
already within the bicycle industry, with the knowledge and skills
required to work as a service technician or bicycle assembler
within a bicycle workshop.
Graduates will be able to work safely, under limited supervision
of a mechanic, to industry standards and provide the community
with confidence in the bicycle sales, service and repair sector.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

operate safely in a workshop environment under limited
supervision and select, use, and maintain equipment and
tools appropriate for undertaking routine bicycle service and
repair tasks
-
assemble, service, adjust, and test a range of bicycle
systems and system componentry in accordance with
legislation, and safety and industry standards
-
perform warranty and routine servicing requirements in
accordance with manufacturer specifications to fulfil retailer
obligations
-
apply product knowledge to effectively communicate within
the workplace to assist customers with warranty and
servicing, and with the purchase of bicycle components and
accessories
-
understand career opportunities, and the New Zealand
bicycle industry supply-chain for career progression and
comprehensive understanding of the industry and its
functioning.
This qualification leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Bicycle

Mechanics (Level 4) [Ref: 2897].
This qualification may lead into further study towards retail or
tourism qualifications.
Employment and/or
community pathway
Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge
to work in roles such as bicycle service technicians in workshop
or rental contexts, and bicycle assembly in retail outlets.

This qualification will be awarded by the education organisation
with which the learner is enrolled, provided that organisation is
accredited under Section 250 of the Education Act 1989 with an
approved programme towards this qualification.

Assessment of learning outcomes should be predominantly
skills-based, and should include observation of tasks where there
is naturally occurring evidence which contributes to multiple
outcomes.
For learning and assessment, programmes must be resourced to
reflect real or simulated workshops with the full range of
recommended bicycle tooling to meet industry standards.
