Purpose
This is an introductory qualification for people who are beginners in weaving, or who have
an interest in the knowledge and skills in Ngā Mahi ā te Whare Pora.
The compulsory section recognises foundation skills and knowledge in the Raranga,
Tāniko, Taonga Tākaro, and Whatu domains.
The elective section in the qualification is flexible and allows for the selection of standards
from anywhere in field Māori, to broaden the learners’ skills and knowledge in te ao Māori.
Credits gained from this qualification may also contribute towards the award of the
National Certificate in Māori (Te Waharoa) (Level 2) [Ref: 0878], the National Certificate in
Educational Achievement (NCEA) (Level 2) [Ref: 0973], and the National Certificate in
Educational Achievement (NCEA) (Level 3) [Ref: 1039].
This qualification also offers pathways to the National Certificate in Māori Business
Management (Level 4) [Ref: 0365], and the National Certificate in Māori (Te Ngutu Awa)
(Level 4) [Ref: 1006].
Special Notes
Tikanga pertinent to the mana whenua is interwoven through all practices of Ngā Mahi ā te
Whare Pora.

Requirements for Award of Qualification
Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusionlist/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

Changes to structure and content
 Standards 7870 and 7871 was removed from the compulsory set, but may still be used
to meet the elective requirements.
 Standards 7869 and 18689 was added to the compulsory section.

of the qualification is on registration. Candidates may choose to complete version 2 or
transfer their results to version 3 of the qualification.
