Faculty Learning Community (FLC) Application

"Using Student Groups to Teach Critical Thinking"

September 2012– May 2013

Due Monday, September 17, 2012

As part of this FLC, eight (8) faculty will study the course design principles and methods promoted by experts in Problem-

Based Learning (PBL), Case Method Teaching (CMT), & Team-Based Learning (TBL). Each participant will then identify relevant analytical processes for a course to be taught spring semester 2013, and design PBL, CMT &/or TLB assignments to guide students in applying those processes. Participants will also design a critical thinking pre- & post-test to assess student progress in applying the targeted analytical process.

Participation Requirements/Benefits:

 Full or Part time Sacramento State employment between September 2012 – May 2013

 Commitment to attend 10 scheduled FLC meetings and submit all specified deliverables before by deadlines

 $600 in Professional Development Funds awarded upon submission of FLC deliverables

Deliverables

1. A series of 2-3 PBL, CMT &/or TBL assignments for a course taught during spring 2013

2. A critical thinking test that measures an analytical process central to the course and targeted in the featured PBL,

An action research summary analyzing the results of the pre- & post-critical thinking tests as well as evidence from other student work, to be posted on the University's teaching and learning website

4. Participation in a panel presentation as part of the 2013 Summer Teaching Institute

Applicants will be selected based on the following criteria:

• Format/Size of course selected for LMS implementation: Preference will be given to faculty proposing PBL/CMT/TBL implementation in the following types of courses:

Lecture format large enrollment (80-200) GE courses

Upper level courses for majors

Activity/Project based/Lab formats

• Preparation: What experience has the faculty had with using student groups and/or problem-based instruction to teach critical thinking? What vision do they have for best practice implementation? If experience is limited, how motivated is the faculty member to acquire new skills?

• Interest/Experience in education research: At what level has the faculty member expressed interest or participated in assessment of student learning or research on teaching and learning?

• Diversity of Disciplines: faculty will be drawn from a range of disciplines in order to address critical thinking from a number of different angles.
