Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences California State University Northridge Policy on Repeating Pre-Clinical Phase Classes for Department Undergraduate and Pre-CDS Majors The SOLAR system will block registration if a student seeks to enroll in a class that has been previously attempted. The University policy allows students to request enrollment for a repeated class by permission number only on or after the first day of instruction. In the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences, a grade of A or B in the pre-clinical phase block of courses (i.e., CD 405, 410, 415, and 442) is one of the requirements in order for a student to be awarded clinical privileges. Holding clinical privileges is necessary for a student to be eligible to take any advanced course that involves client contact (i.e., CD 469O, CD 465, CD 566, and CD 469B). Under the present circumstances of significantly reduced budget for instruction at CSUN and a very high demand for pre-clinical phase classes by first-time students, the department will not offer permission numbers to any student requesting a repeat of any pre-clinical phase course for the Fall 2011 term. For an undergraduate major in Communication Disorders and Sciences who is not eligible for the clinical phase due to a grade of less than a B in a pre-clinical phase class, the option is to continue taking the remainder of the courses in the major without taking any of the client contact classes. This is called a “non-clinical major”. It allows a student the opportunity to complete the major requirements of the BA degree by substituting or waiving CD 469O, CD 465, CD 566, and CD 469B. Course substitution will be considered if the student needs additional classes to meet graduate requirements; otherwise, the clinical contact classes will be waived. Students who find themselves in the situation of not having a satisfactory grade in a pre-clinical phase class to advance to clinical privileges should contact their department academic advisors for assistance. Pre-CDS majors are post-graduate students who are enrolled in a specific course of study to qualify for admission to a graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology. The same rules on access to a repeat class apply to Pre-CDS majors, in that permission numbers will not be available for the Fall 2010 term for repeating a pre-clinical phase class. However, as graduate students, pre-CDS majors will not be allowed to progress any further in the program until the lessthan-satisfactory grade in a pre-clinical phase class is resolved by a grade of B or better in some future semester. At a future term, if conditions permit, it may be possible to relax the restriction on repeating preclinical phase classes. At any point, if a student repeats a class and earns a grade of B or better, that class would be counted toward fulfill of the academic requirements for clinical privileges. Finally, the department will not accept a class taken at another university as a substitute for a course taken in the pre-clinical phase with a grade of less than a B. In other words, the only acceptable repeated course is one taken in the same academic program as the original course.
