Answer Key

Short Answer

1. one-way (forward) transmission; excitation and inhibition; plasticity modulation strength; different kinds of computations (e.g., fast vs slow, add/subtract vs multiply, coincidence detection)

2. fMRI advantage: spatial resolution. EEG advantage: temporal resolution.

3. Can't shake it in the right direction only (hair cell response depends on direction of bending). Can't shake it at a high enough frequency (200 Hz to 10,000 Hz).

4. Middle ear is the air space between the tympanic membrane and the cochlea, where the ossicular chain is located. When the middle ear is full of fluid, the air pressure changes in the ear canal are pushing directly against the fluid on the other side of the tympanic membrane. Need ossicular chain to amplify before pushing fluid.
