NOTES: Building Aligned Curriculum Implementing a New Curriculum Unit Step 5: Revise the Unit Based on Teacher Feedback and Student Data Video: Building Aligned Curriculum Toolkit [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUDbR50fEeM&feature=youtu.be] Introduction: This toolkit is designed to help a district or a team of teachers customize and implement new curriculum units in ways that address their learning goals for students. We suggest that you watch the video in its entirety first. Then, as you focus on each step, use the related handout and review the specific video segment. Step 5 Video Segment: Begin at 8:40. Rationale: The fifth step in the process is to revise the unit based on information you and your team collected as you taught the unit and discussed it in your team meetings. The goal is to develop an effective, tested unit that you can use again and also share with others. Time: 1–2 hours for planning; several sessions for revising the unit Directions: Based on your team’s evaluation of the unit’s effectiveness (Step 4), make a work plan to revise the unit with your team. Further customize the unit to improve how it will lead students to meet the intended understandings. Suggested Questions for Discussion: Which elements of the unit should remain the same because they supported students in reaching the intended understandings? Which elements of the unit should be changed because students did not meet the intended goals? What additional resources did you develop while teaching the unit? Can you think of any other resources that might support students to better meet the unit goals? Have you included resources that address the variability of learners? Suggested Materials and Resources: Your notes from Step 3 Your notes from Step 4 Additional materials that you developed, or plan to develop, to clarify the lesson sequence Product at the End of These Sessions: A revised unit that reflects the customization and edits from your work with your team NOTES: Connections to the Massachusetts 5-Step Educator Evaluation Cycle: Discussion Questions: o Thinking about the evidence you collected from planning the implementation of the unit, what evidence can you collect of implementation and adjustments to practice to create a story of how you developed curriculum, tried it out, and made adjustments for future use? o How can this evidence be connected to the Model Performance Rubric and/or your goals?
