Date Subject/Period Math Teacher H Finn Starter Review application of the Pythagorean Theorem in word problems (up for 5 minutes) Start the Alice world and the Pythagoras will walk the students through the steps for Applying the Pythagorean relationship twice to find the interior diagonal of a rectangular prism. Exit Slip Do ticket out the door questions: Are we good? What do we need to work on? What did we master? Homework Using the animation and code given, students can create an animation for a similar problem with a rectangular prism with different dimensions. Essential Question (?) Can I apply the Pythagorean Theorem in three dimensional problems? Goal/ Essential Standard MA2010(8) 22. Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions. Objective introduce the exponent and multiplication rule Applications of the Pythagorean Theorem Learning Target: “I Can” I can create a simple animation of a solution to a three dimensional problem using the Pythagorean Theorem Instructional Strategies: Hands on with a computer Student grouping: individual or groups of two Check for student understanding throughout the lesson through questioning. Overview/Annotation: Students will use Alice to make an animation in order to help visualize the steps to finding the interior diagonal distance from top to bottom of opposite sides of a rectangular prism. This type of problem can be solved by using the Pythagorean relationship to find the length of the diagonal of the base of the rectangular prism. Once this is known, it can be used with the height of the prism to solve the problem by applying the Pythagorean relationship one more time. Students can write code for a fade in and fade out for each scene change.
