Pace University Academic Advisor Job Description Assist students with course selection for each semester; 4 year academic planning; monitor registration and academic progress Discuss students’ plans and feelings about college, goal planning and career aspirations Maintain accurate student records (electronic and otherwise) Stay informed of university policies and standard procedures, and disseminate information to students when necessary Counsel students on major options and degree requirements Advise on minors, combined degrees, double/dual/triple majors, and graduate school Maintain frequent contact with advisees via email communication, list-servs, in-person appointments, etc.; be available and respond in a timely fashion to student requests/needs Understand and adhere to the university’s FERPA rules for the release of student information to parents, guardians, etc. Troubleshoot various issues and provide solutions to academic difficulties, including but not limited to time management, communication with professors, retroactive/late withdrawals Serve as liaison and maintain relationships with other departments, such as Counseling Center, Disability Services, Career Services, Financial Aid, and Office for Student Assistance Create advising materials for presentations to faculty, staff and students Train faculty advisors and administrative staff on Core Curriculum, Faculty Resources, Degree Works (beginning summer, 2013), Blackboard and other resources Spearhead probation student communication, advisement, tracking, and follow-up with professors Participate in First Year Student and Transfer Student Orientation (create all freshman schedules; assist with transition to Pace University from high school or previous college/university) Assist with the proper evaluation of transfer credits; research course descriptions to determine transferability; ensure courses are transferred appropriately and in timely fashion Review and pre-approve study aboard requests to ensure smooth transfer process; remain in contact with student while abroad to help resolve issues that arise Plan and participate in Admission’s conversion events and College/School events Participate in university student development and retention programs Responsible for updating, housing and distributing worksheets to other departments and students Ensure that students are on track for graduation; work closely with academic departments and Degree Audit Office Participation on multiple committees university-wide to improve overall services and student experience Engage in professional development activities, including memberships in professional organizations; attendance at conferences, workshops, training sessions; stay current with information technology skills Advocate for students, where appropriate
