MAED 452 Practicum in Mathematics I Spring 2011 Instructor: Sharon Emerson-Stonnell Phone: 434-395-2197 Office: Ruffner 333 E-mail: emersonstonnellss@longwood.edu Office Hours: MTWRF 9 am – 10:30am or by appointment Course description: An in-depth observation and participation practicum. Placed in public school settings for at least 60 hours under supervision of Longwood faculty. Course Requirements: Each student is expected to 1. come prepared and actively participate in all class meetings (11 hours total). The time and location will be based upon schedules. 2. Turn in a mathematics portfolio by Monday, January 24 3. arrange classroom observations with the cooperating teacher throughout the semester. 4. complete at least 50 hours of field experience with time divided between class observation and tutoring. 5. complete at least 25 hours of lesson planning. 6. complete a total of 90 hours of class time, observation, tutoring, and lesson planning. 7. dress and behave professionally when teaching and observing. 8. arrive on-time for each observation and tutoring session and with prepared lessons for each tutoring session. 9. have his/her lesson plans approved by the Longwood University supervisor before each lesson is taught. 10. teach lessons that actively engage students. This could include partner activities, calculator activities, hands-on activities, and discussion. While lecture will be a part of each lesson it should not be the majority of the lesson. 11. discuss the lesson with the Longwood University supervisor after each tutoring session. 12. follow recommendations of cooperating teacher and the Longwood University supervisor for each lesson. 13. complete the sections Contextual Factors, Learning Goals, Design for Instruction, and Instructional Decision Making of a Teacher Work Sample. Tutoring Assignments: Each student will be assigned a student in Prince Edward County Middle School who requires extra assistance in mathematics. This tutoring student will be the student of your cooperating teacher. The tutoring times will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 – 5:00pm. The tutoring locations will be at Prince Edward Middle School and begin on January 25. For tutoring and observations, carpooling can be arranged. Submit the results of the Criminal Background Check (http://www.longwood.edu/professionalservices/29602.htm) to Longwood University supervisor and Office of Professional Services by the start of the course. 2. Submit Tuberculosis Skin Test or Chest X-Ray results to Longwood University supervisor and Office of Professional Services by the start of the course. 3. Submit automobile insurance form (http://www.longwood.edu/assets/professionalservices/Automobile_Insurance_Form -1.pdf) to Longwood University supervisor and Office of Professional Services by the start of the course. 4. A student must notify the cooperating teacher and their Longwood University supervisor if illness or an emergency necessitates an absence from a scheduled field activity. This must be done prior to, not following the time of the scheduled field activity. 5. Dr. Sharon Emerson-Stonnell must approve any changes in the assignment or scheduled hours. 6. Students are expected to follow their approved schedule and their responsibilities as explained to them by their professors or cooperating teacher. 7. Students must follow the policies, rules, and regulations of the university and Prince Edward County Public Schools at all times. 8. Students must DRESS PROPERLY (as defined by the Longwood University supervisor) and appropriately for the specific field placement as defined by the school and university supervisor. 9. Students must report to the agency's main office or other designated place on the first day of the scheduled visit. They must report on time. 10. Students must conduct themselves in a professional manner while in the institutions. They must be cooperative with agency personnel and attentive at all times while visiting in the institution. They should: a. Learn as much as possible about the general "climate" for learning. b. Show a willingness to help and perform duties as assigned. c. Concentrate on studying the learning environment with respect to such items as the following: Acquisition of certain teaching competencies (see Appendix B); physical features that contribute to teaching effectiveness, complete daily schedule, textbooks, and other teaching materials used. The way subject matter is organized and presented. The use of individual and group instruction and the interplay of various methods of teaching any evaluation devices used. The cooperating teacher's methods of dealing with infractions of rules and the general handling of discipline. Differences in learning abilities, temperament, emotional control, and general personal characteristics of the students. Interrelationships of the student's major subject with other curricular areas. Teacher's professional duties in addition to classroom teaching, the collaborative efforts among professionals necessary to provide for individual differences. 11. Students should maintain close communication with their cooperating teacher and professor about all phases of the field activity. 12. Students must be prepared for each tutoring session with lesson plans, activities, all materials necessary to perform activities, and assessment plans. Students represent Longwood while they are at a cooperating agency. In all matters of conduct and personal appearance, students are expected to comply with the standards of the agency to which they are assigned. Failure to comply with these standards may result in cancellation of their field activity. Students whose schedules are cancelled for such reasons will not be rescheduled and such failure to complete the field activity will be reported to their professor.
