THE CSDS GATE: Students who have not yet met the gate requirements will be designated as Pre-Communication Sciences and Disorders (PCSD) majors. Once the gate requirements have been met, a Change of Major form must be completed to change the student’s major designation from PCSD to CSDS. It will be the individual student’s responsibility to initiate the completion of this form. Students must meet with their respective advisors prior to completion/submission of the form to the Longwood Registrar. The Change of Major form must be completed at least two weeks prior to the applicable registration period. Transfers: When you enter Longwood, you bring course credits with you, but not a GPA. You will begin building your Longwood GPA after you arrive on campus. While you are building your Longwood GPA, you may take CSDS courses that are numbered through 313. You will not be able to register for CSDS courses at or beyond the 314 level until after grades are posted following the completion of your first semester here at Longwood. Gate Requirements: All Students in PCSD must meet the following requirements in order to register for upper level CSDS courses: 45 credit hours minimum GPA of 3.0 earned “B” or better in ENGL 150 (or equivalent course at community college or other institution) earned “B“ or better in BIOL 101 (or equivalent course at community college or other institution) IV. SPED Minor: Some of the requirements for the SPED minor are satisfied by completing required courses in the CSDS major. SPED 411 and SPED 322 are the only additional courses to complete the SPED minor. These courses can be counted as General Electives. If you select SPED as a minor, you must complete a Change of Major or Add a Minor form to officially be enrolled in the program. VII. SLP Online Courses: The SLP Online program is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than CSDS and are changing careers. This program will provide them with foundation coursework needed to apply to a graduate program in CSDS. The program is not open to the enrollment of on-campus undergraduate PCSD/CSDS majors. Longwood residential and commuter students are only allowed to register for on-campus sections of CSDS courses. Students with extenuating circumstances may request to apply for permission to register for an online section with designated advisors. A committee decision will determine the outcome. VIII. GRADUATION REQUIREMENT: a total of 120 credit hours Students who are applying to graduate school should be aware that most graduate programs in CSD expect at least a “B” in CSDS courses and a minimum GPA of 3.0. These goals are not required for graduation from Longwood University. At the graduate level, students should be prepared to repeat any CSDS course in which a grade of C+ or lower was earned. To build a more favorable transcript and GPA, an undergraduate student may also consider re-taking a CSDS course having a grade of C or lower before graduating. Course taken after graduation will not improve your GPA. If you have additional questions about graduate school expectations, please see your advisor.
