Process for Users
Users will receive an email invitation directly from Amazon Business to join The University of Akron Shared Amazon Business
Account. Users are required to:
Transfer personal Amazon accounts associated with their University of Akron email address to a personal email address
(e.g., Gmail, Yahoo etc.) before they accept the invitation.
2. Accept the Amazon Business invitation.
3. Follow the step-by-step instructions on how to enroll in the Amazon Tax Exemption Program. This must be completed
before the first purchase. Each user will need to enter this information separately because of the individual Pcards.

Accepting the Amazon Business Invitation
Step Task
1. Once you have been added to the Amazon Business Account as a User, you will receive an
email invitation directly from Amazon to officially join the business account. Click the Accept
the invitation button from the invitation email.
2. Click the Continue button.
3. If an existing Amazon account exists using a University of Akron email address, skip to step 4.
If no Amazon account has been previously established, the User will be prompted to enter
his/her First and Last Name and a Password for the The University of Akron email address in
the business account.
Click the Create account button.
Result: You will see an Almost complete! Window.
Click the Complete button.
Result: You will receive a confirmation that your account has been created.
Business account complete, proceed to the next section on Amazon Tax Exemption.

4. If you see the following sign-in page, it means that an Amazon account already exists with
your work email address. Use the password that you originally set for that account to sign in
and accept the invite. If you do not remember your password, please click the ‘forgot
password’ link and an email will be sent for you to reset your password.
5. If the existing Amazon account was used for purchases for the benefit of The University of
Akron, click Confirm and continue.
Result: You will see an Almost complete! Window.
Click the Complete button.
Result: You will receive a confirmation that your account has been created.
Business account creation complete, proceed to next section on Amazon Tax Exemption.
Otherwise, if the existing Amazon account is using the The University of Akron email and is
used for personal purchases, you must transfer the Amazon account to a personal email
address (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo., etc.) and must not be used in association with an The
University of Akron email address. Click Change Personal Account Email.
6. There are 2 steps to transferring the Amazon personal account to the The University of Akron
Shared Amazon Business account. Click the Continue button.

7. Change the email on your Amazon personal account. Enter and confirm the new email
address to transfer your personal account information from the The University of Akron
email address.
8. Create an account for business.
 Enter and confirm the password associated with the The University of Akron email
address used in the The University of Akron Shared Amazon Business Account.
 Click the Create account button.
Result: You will see an Almost complete! Window.
 Click the Complete button.
Result: You will receive a confirmation that your account has been created.
Proceed to the following section on the Amazon Tax Exemption Program.

Tax exemption applies to items sold by:
 Amazon.com LLC
 Amazon Digital Services, Inc.

What if an account previously reflected tax exemption before registering for Amazon Business?

If a user migrated an existing Amazon account when registering for an Amazon Business account, then existing tax
exemption status will carry over.
If a user created a new account to register for an Amazon Business account, then the user should take steps to remove
the tax exemption and the exemption process will need to be completed for the business account.

Upload tax exemption certification directly
Step

Prior to enrolling, locate and save the The University of Akron Tax Exemption Certificate to
your computer desktop.
Login to Amazon.com.

Click Your Account to Sign In with your newly created Amazon Business account.
4.
Go to Your Name Account for Business (upper right hand corner) and click Your Account.
5.
Scroll down to the Settings section and click Amazon Tax Exemption Program (ATEP).

Click Get Started!
Result: You will see a list of state jurisdictions.
DO NOT SELECT ANY STATE JURISDICTIONS. DO NOT SAVE AND CONTINUE.
Click Exit this Wizard to upload your exemption form directly.

Browse and select the The University of Akron Tax Exemption Certificate saved to your
desktop in step 1 above.

Click the checkbox to agree to Terms and Conditions.
Click Upload button.
Result: You will see a green bordered box confirming successful upload --- NOTE that
review of documentation will occur within a few business days – Do not shop until Tax
Exemption has been confirmed.

After the exemption has been approved and applied to your Amazon account, you will be
notified by email and you may make your tax-exempt purchases.
Requesting Sales Tax Reimbursement for 3rd Party Sellers
3rd Party sellers (vendors) are not required to enroll in the Amazon Tax Exemption Program and are not able to see account
information, such as tax exemption, on customer accounts.
In the event your order has been charged sales tax and your account reflects tax exemption, you can contact the seller (vendor)
directly and request sales tax reimbursement.
Tax reimbursement will be credited to your account and can take to 24-48 hours to process. If you are unable to get in contact
with a vendor or see that sales tax has not been reimbursed (after 3 business days), contact Amazon’s dedicated businesscustomer service: (866) 486-2360 or email the ATEP team (auto-exempt@amazon.com).
Request a Tax Refund from Amazon
If you qualify for tax exemption but did not enroll in the Amazon Tax Exemption Program, you can request a tax refund for
products sold by Amazon.com LLC, Amazon Digital Services, Inc., Warehouse Deals, Inc., Amazon Services LLC or sold by other
sellers and fulfilled by Amazon.
First, place your order and wait for your shipment confirmation. Submit your tax exemption documentation for the state to
which your items shipped by fax or e-mail in order to receive a refund of any sales tax. Send scanned copies in PDF format to

tax-exempt@amazon.com. You may also fax the documents to (206) 266-2005. For more information about tax exempt
documentation, go to Tax Exempt Documentation.
Important: Please include the following:
• Your order number (17 digits in this format: XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX).
• E-mail address.
• Acceptable proof of your exempt status (as outlined above).
• The name of the seller who sold the item(s) completed on the exemption documentation.
• The name of the organization that purchased the item(s).
• If sending a fax, mark your fax "Attn: Amazon Tax Exempt".
