Early Modern Design, 1900-1920
Genesis of Modern Design:
Peter Behrens & the New Objectivity (Germany):
Recognized as the pivotal innovator in the transition from the floral and
decorative of the 19th century to the simple, functional geometric
forms of 20th century.
Frank Lloyd Wright (USA):
The rejection of historicism in favor of a philosophy of ‘organic
architecture’ with the ‘reality of the building’ existing.

London Underground Design:
Decorating the underground stations, providing public art education,

Pictorial Modernism:
Influenced by Cubism and Constructivism.
Graphic designers involved in the poster walked a tightrope between
the creation of expressive and symbolic images on one hand and their
concern for the total visual organization of the picture plane on the
other hand.
