Trevor Ascheman College Composition I picked “The Last Monarch Of The Season” for my poem. The reason I picked this poem is because it had some value in its words. Also when I read it I thought of all the times my father and I have went hunting and left my mother early in the morning. I liked the poem very much because I thought it made a reference to my own life. It didn’t mean a great deal to me but it brought back many found memories for me at first. Then when I thought about it more I remembered a certain time when dad and me went hunting. We got up incredibly early in the morning and left for Sisseton South Dakota. We hunted deer all day and had a great day. Then at dusk we shot a small buck. We tracked into the night, it soon got to dark to follow a trail and it was a weak trail to follow. Since it was dark we went back to the truck for a flashlight. Our flashlight’s batteries were out so another man that was hunting near us, went back to his house for some batteries. After he left my dad’s friend came racing up like a mad man and we thought what the on earth could this be about. He jumped out of the truck and told us that my mom was in the hospital and we had to go home immediately. We had such a horrific feeling rush over us. We had been on many hunting trips together but we never thought anything would happen to the one most important people to both of us. We made the three-hour journey in about two hours; it was the longest quietest trip of my life. When we arrived at home we heard my mom wasn’t only in the hospital but she was in serious condition. It was a hard time and my mom almost died and it was a tough time for us. After I read the poem it made me think what if you don’t get the time to say goodbye. Each poem has a different meaning to each person. Everyone can interpret a poem differently and that is what makes certain poems important to different people.
