Title of Lesson- Understanding Elements
Previous Assignment- Bring one poem, and one short story to class that exhibits several of
the elements discussed about each genre. Be prepared for a quiz on the elements.
Objective(s) – Students will demonstrate a complete understanding of the two genre’s
elements.
Students will demonstrate their ability to use the library and other sources
to obtain short stories and poems.

Teacher Activities- Place the students in small groups 3-4 to share their materials and what
elements they identified within the works.
Ask students to write the names of their poem and short story on the board. Compare names and
chose works that are shared between students and discuss those works with the entire class. Ask
students to give a brief synopsis and explain what elements they identified.
Give students quiz on elements of poetry and short stories
Student Activities-share with members of their group what materials the brought in and
what elements were displayed by each one. Write the names of their selected works on the
board. Explain the elements they identified in their work that they chose to bring to class.
Fill out quiz on elements of poetry and short stories
Evaluation- The quizzes taken on the elements, will prove the students ability to identify the
elements of a short story and poetry.
