Composition 1 Portfolio Presentation By: Linda Sabinash December 2000 Introduction The narrative essay has helped me to learn how to describe and tell a story better. Comparison and contrast has helped me to compare two things effectively. The definition essay has helped me to learn how to describe what something means to me. The persuasion essay has taught me how to convince someone to see a subject from my point of view. Changes in My Writing This Semester I have learned to write an effective summary. I know how to cite sources correctly in my writing. I have learned four ways to organize essays. I know the essential features of a good thesis statement. I have learned how to write an essay from first and third point of view. I have learned several effective ways to write introductions. I have learned to write an effective summary. A good summary should sum up the basic idea of what something is about. This is an example of an effective summary because I summed up my essay and what it contained. Back to slide 3 I know how to cite my sources correctly in my writing. I learned how to use the MLA method of citing sources. Citing sources correctly means to give credit to the person from which you took your information from. Comparison and Contrast Narrative Persuasion I think this was my best essay because I had some very strong points to support my ideas. It was easy to write because I actually cared about the topic I was writing about. Definition Back to slide 3 I know the essential features of a good thesis statement A good thesis statement should introduce your topic, let the reader know what the writer is going to talk about, and show where the writer stands about the issue. Back to slide 3 Good thesis statement. This is an example of a good thesis statement. “Buckling your seat belts should not be a law. “ This is a good thesis statement because it introduces my essay and tells the writer where I stand about the issue. Points of View I learned how to write from different points of view in Composition I instead of always from the second point of view. This essay shows an example of this. Back to slide 3 Introductions I have also learned several different ways to write introductions instead of always writing them the same way. This document shows an example of this. Back to slide 3 Conclusion I have exhibited writing skills for levels One and Two. Expressing my thoughts clearly Compose correct sentences Coherent paragraphs Inserts research appropriately Writing Skill / Levels 1 & 2 Level One: Expresses clearly thoughts and ideas in informal writing contexts. Composes structurally correct sentences in Standard American English. Generates well-developed, coherent paragraphs. Level Two: Processes information to produce writing that clearly and accurately summarizes and/or reports. Writes, well-developed, focused essays.
