ALTERNATIVE BALLAST WATER EXCHANGE AREAS Workshop on Physical and Biological Oceanographic Considerations Steering Committee Tim Keeney, NOAA Kathy Moore, USCG Rich Everett, USCG Randy Fisher, PSMFC GOAL To Gain a Greater Understanding of the Biological and Physical Oceanographic Processes That Control Cross/AlongShelf Plankton Transport in U.S. Waters. GOAL: To gain a greater understanding of biological and physical oceanographic processes that control cross/along-shelf plankton transport in U.S. waters. Purpose: Better inform management and regulatory decision-making for coastal and estuarine ecosystems. The key issue of concern for this meeting is the designation of Alternative Ballast Water Exchange Areas (ABWEA). However, the syntheses, findings, and recommendations will also have value for fisheries and biodiversity management more broadly. Benefit to Fisheries and Biodiversity Management Prorocentrum mexicanum (red tide) Pfiesteria spp. ABWEA? AGENDA PREVIOUS ABWEA REPORTS AND STUDIES Barth, Jack, Barbara Hickey and Curt Collins. 2003.
