mural was completed between October 2007 and January 2008 with ten youth from the Choice
Prince Georges Co. offices working with Project Youth ArtReach mural artist Joey Tomassoni.
Along with youth, parents and Choice Program staff and fellows collaborated on the concept
and imagery, which grew out of discussions about the positive impact of The Choice Program on
its participants. The mural will be exhibited on the Freedom Wall of the Maryland State House
showcasing court-involved youths potential and motivation to change their lives.


“Breaking the Cycle” Radio Dialogue. Sunday, February 10, 2008 2:00-4:00 p.m. Brother
Bey, the founder of the Fraternal Order of X-Offenders (F.O.X.O), hosts a weekly radio show on
W.O.L.B (1010 am) that presents community-based, ex-offender driven efforts in Baltimore and
elsewhere that are helping to break the cycle of violence. The primary focus of the F.O.X.O.’s
“Breaking The Cycle” Radio Dialogue is to extend discussion, increase consideration of
community-driven alternatives, and initiate and expand the collective action needed to deter,
decrease and prevent the pandemic of juvenile delinquency and adult criminality gripping
Baltimore and many other communities. The radio show provides a voice to those attempting
to change their thinking and behaviors, informing ex-offenders, their families, and others of

A CDC Review of School Laws and Policies Concerning Child and Adolescent Health. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) and Public
Health Law Program engaged legal scholars and researchers at the Centers for Law and the Public’s
Health: A Collaborative at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities to review the use of law as a
tool for improving and protecting the health and safety of children, adolescents, and staff in public
elementary and secondary schools. The culmination of the project is the report “A CDC Review of
School Laws and Policies Concerning Child and Adolescent Health.” Using the Coordinated School
Health Program (CSHP) model as a framework, the report gives educators and public health
professionals new access to information on laws and policies important to the health of children and
adolescents in schools. It is intended to help practitioners and policymakers in public health and
education at the federal, state, and local levels enhance their knowledge of relevant laws and policies.

The 2008 Fact Sheet on Health Care Access and Utilization: Adolescents and Young Adults contains
the most recent available data on health insurance coverage, preventive and other health services, and
unmet need among adolescents and young adults ages 12-24, including those with special health care
needs. The fact sheet, produced by the National Adolescent Health Information Center at the
University of California, San Francisco, with support from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau,
highlights trends and presents data by age, gender, income level, and race and ethnicity. Information

Investments to Promote Children's Health: A Systematic Literature Review and Economic Analysis
of Interventions in the Preschool Period examines the short- and long-term impacts of healthpromotion and disease-prevention interventions on selected health problems in infants
and young children from birth to age 5. The report, published by the Partnership for America's
Economic Success with support from the Zanvyl and Isabelle Krieger Fund, reviews the patterns and
monetary burden of poor child health, the cost implications of preventing and treating child health
problems, and cost-benefit analyses related to the interventions. Summaries of studies of interventions
during pregnancy that report child health and economic outcomes are included. The full report is

Baltimore City Public School students To Participate in Lexington Market’s Black History Month
Celebration. As part of the Black History Month Celebration at Lexington Market, hundreds of students
will be a part of the month-long event, "Music, Dance, Art And Education At The Market." Students from
various elementary, middle and high schools will enjoy a motivational talk from a special guest, then
give a special performance before the lunchtime crowd. The school performances are Monday through

Baltimore Scholars Program Names Its First Charter School Recipient. Congratulations to Paul
DiMatteo, a high school senior at the Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE). He has been
named a Johns Hopkins University Baltimore Scholar, making him the first charter school student to
receive the award. The Baltimore Scholars Program covers full-time undergraduate tuition at JHU. It is
one of the university’s most prestigious scholarships. Currently, DiMatteo has a 4.120 grade point
average on a 4.0 scale. "Paul has shown initiative by applying and participating in the Johns Hopkins
Biotech Program during the summer of his 9th grade year. He also has been able to balance work and
school by maintaining the highest level of academic honors throughout his high school career," said
ACCE Academic Advisor Jennifer Reed. About 60 Baltimore City Public School System graduates are now
Baltimore Scholars. The program began in the fall of 2005. JHU officials implemented the program to

Sharing Coalition (SSC) for our Afterschool Justice Circles for Middle School Youth for one-two students
per site to assist our VISTA/Americorps members. Justice Circles are offered two days per week
afterschool. The program teaches community organizing skills, involves youth in direct service, assists
with homework and brings in community volunteers who share skills and artwork with youth. If you are

Agenda. The Parent and Community Advisory Board (PCAB) was established to advise the Baltimore City
Board of School Commissioners in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
PCAB supports parent involvement by helping to facilitate the flow of information from parents and
community to the Board of School Commissioners, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and BCPSS
administrators. PCAB is knowledgeable and informed about BCPSS policies, operations, and student
data. The Board also helps to organize parent and community members to have an effective voice with
the Board of School Commissioners. PCAB meetings are conducted in an open and public setting. During

Baltimore, MD: Graduate Seminar on Injury Research and Policy: Violence Prevention. The focus of
the Graduate Seminar on Injury Research and Policy for the 3rd term in 2008 will be on violence
prevention. The seminar series is jointly sponsored by the Center for Injury Research and Policy and
the Center for the Prevention of Youth Violence at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public
