Homework 1
Part A: Unit Conversions and Scientific Notation
sheet to receive credit.
Be sure to show all work on this
1. The leaning tower of Pisa has a height of 185 ft. What is its height in
centimeters?
2. If a lecture lasts from 10am to 10:50am how long is that in milliseconds?
3. The speed of sound is approximately 340 m/s in air. How fast is this in km/hr?
How fast is this in miles per hour?
4. This one is a bit more difficult. Give it a try.  US letter size paper measures 8.5”
by 11”. What is its area in cm2 (Note that you first have to convert the length and
width into cm)?
5. Write the following numbers in scientific notation:
2,004
40,000,001
-10
0.125
-0.00000341
Write the following in longhand form:
1.02 x 103
3.25 x 10-5
5 x 106
3.58 x 10-4
314 x 10-3
6. In the equation distance=speed x time, or d=vt, calculate the missing quantity (use the
“triangle method” if it helps ):
a) Given v=3x105 km/s, d=1.5x1011m
b) Given t=3h, d=distance from Seattle to Portland
c) Given v=340m/s, t=8s
