VCSU All-Senate Get Together Meeting Minutes October 18, 2011 I. II. III. Call to Order a. Meeting called to order at 11:22am. Attendance: a. Last February we brought forth Dead Week, and will be dropping that topic ii. More emphasis on syllabus and how it works in classroom iii. Course outline 1. In Business Division, they discuss what is done each week 2. Use across campus. a. A checklist for the faculty is used, one of the questions discusses the course outline b. Students would like a good idea of what is expected of them when December rolls around. c. Students feel that the course outline keeps them prepared d. Faculty feels it would be beneficial as well iv. Understanding of what the course requires in the syllabus 1. Has abilities project on there, but how detailed is the project? a. Not all classes where you can start the abilities project right away. v. Teach L2L about the abilities project a. Something to associate them together b. L2L should have access to them earlier vi. Brief syllabi are not good because they are less informative than those that are a little more thorough. 1. Things are more located. vii. Could be used as an L2L for tips on syllabus and abilities project viii. Train students and reinforce saving the syllabus and abilities project b. Midterm Grading i. Request coming from senate because students didn’t know where they were at. ii. We need a midpoint to check on student participation to assist with the financial aid officer so students are attending class iii. Helps with retention on campus and identifying students who are in trouble. iv. Sometimes faculty is having trouble identifying students who are in trouble. v. ConnectND is an easy place to save the midterm grades. vi. An email will be sent to students to explain how to view the midterm grades. There isn’t a simple way to inform students that have a deficiency vii. Advisor will be encouraged to get in touch with students that have a deficiency c. Hiring Process i. Noticing a number of important vacancies on campus ii. How does the hiring process work? 1. Roelfsema is chairing the search for the Information Desk position. 2. Starts with reviewing applications, interview, then hire 3. Events help cause the problem why people on the search committee to meet at a regular time. 4. By law, there are 21 days for advertising a position. 5. Faculty hiring processes are different. a. Some students are not part of certain search committees. d. Appropriate Dress i. People are wearing things from their alma mater 1. Students are not comfortable ii. In the education department, there are students from NDSU that are taking classes. They are on campus two days a week, and this helps those students know who is from where. iii. Shows students to take pride in their college, which will soon be their alma mater iv. Divisions should deal with this issue, noting that faculty should not wear clothing from their alma mater. v. Wearing the clothing from their alma maters might sway prospective students away from VCSU. vi. Faculty should be aware of this issue, and making it a good point to support VCSU. vii. Should dress contextually depending on the situation. e. HLC Visit i. Will be here next week on Tuesday and Wednesday ii. Student forum iii. Need student senate to come. Encourage other students. iv. Only time the student is meeting with students. IV. V. v. They are going to write a recommendation to the Higher learning commission about the future of the campus vi. Wanting to return a positive report. vii. Give them a well-rounded useful report. viii. Affects student transfer and student financial aid. ix. A college that is not accredited does not transfer credits from campus to campus. x. If a college is not accredited you cannot receive federal financial aid. xi. Important points to remember 1. We are a laptop university 2. We have a record enrollment this year 3. New majors that have grown enrollment 4. New sports: golf, track and field, cross country 5. Facility improvements 6. Mission and vision of the University is on page 4 of the planner. f. Rhoades Update i. Sidewalks will close, parking access will close ii. Jessica in Facilities is working on a web page for constant updates. iii. Live camera and feed to see what’s going on iv. Pleasantly surprised that there were a number of bidders on the project. v. Bids came in lower than expected. Things that they thought would be eliminated will be included. Announcements Adjournment a. Meeting adjourned at 12:26pm.
