The majestic figure if Big Buddha is seated on the hillside of Po
Lin Monastery. The eyes, lips, incline of the head and even
the right hand raised to deliver a blessing to all. It is 26.4
metres high, weighted 220 tones and it took 10 years to
complete. It is the heightest bronze buddha in the world.
Finally, it was opened in 1993 for tourists to visit. There is an
information centre under the Big Buddha, but you have to
buy a ticket before going in.
Big Buddha is an attraction in which the National Geographic
Traveller commend tourists to go.
You can also place in your hands a bamboo cylinder containing
a mass of fortune sticks, and by shaking it carefully, one
numbered stick will finally fall to the ground. Match it with
the relevant printed Fortune Paper and learn what the Fates
have in store for you. This is a very tradtional fortune-telling
method of the Chinese.
 Tai O is a popular tourist spot in Lantau Island, as
it has its unique culture and natural environment, a
lot of tourists would like to go and visit there.
 Tai O is famous for its fishing village scenery, such
as fishing boats, waterways and stilt houses, theses
historical settings have been retained in nowadays.
 The fishing village setting, especially the stilt houses
is probably the most important feature which makes
Tai O attractive to local and international visitors.
Stilt houses are the special architectures in
Tai O, in the past, the majority of population
in Tai O worked either in farms or in the sea.
For the convenience of work, people began to
build some special kind of houses along the
riverside, which could be easily pulled down
and rebuilt. Most of the stilt houses are now
built with wood and tin plates. Stone pillars
underneath the ‘pang’ are also replaced by a
kind of concrete wood, which can stand
strong winds .
Helen:How much does this stilt house cost?
Father:This stilt house may cost nowadays at
least seven to eight hundred thousand
dollars, this is not very expensive, but
we can already keep the tradition
culture. As a response to meet the
growing family size, flat roofs have
replaced rounded roofs to facilitate the
construction of the second floor.
Helen: Do you enjoy living here?
Mother: Yes, of course we do. Living here makes us
to relax, we feel free and comfortable here,
we will not be disturbed by the noisy
environment , it is so peace and lovely here.
Helen: There do not have any parks near by, do you
feel bord here?
The son: No, of course I don’t. My neighbors and I
are good friends, we always play together
I don’t feel boring, rather I feel excited, I
enjoy living here more than in the
city! As city is crowded, I don’t have any
friends at all, so I prefer living here.
• Tian Hou Temple has a name of ‘Red tripod Tian Hou
Temple’ because once upon a time, the people lived
here were all fishermen. One day, a fisherman saw a
red tripod that flew on the sea, so he picked it up to
worship the god. Afterward, the other fishermen saw
the red tripod, they admitted that they were the owner
of the red tripod so they put it on their ship and went
to their boat. Unluckily, on that night, a turbulent
wind had come, so the red tripod has lost. But then,
the red tripod appears in there again. So the
fisherman who found that in the sea before thought
that the red tripod appears again because the
manifestation of Ms Tin Hau. From that time onward,
the fishermen built a Tin Hau Temple to worship Ms
Tian Hou. In the Tian Hou Temple, there must have a
red tripod put there.
Tian Hou is represent the queen of the heaven and the people
believed that Tian Hou is the fishermen’s angle. Before the
reclamation, Tian Hou Temple was near the sea, and the
fishermen always went here to worship Tian Hou because
when they got off their boat, the Tian Hou Temple was there.
So it is very convenient. Usually the people who work in the
sea will went here to worship Tian Hou. In the temple, there
have bamboo cylinder for asking the future.
When refrigerator was not invented,
people could not keep the fresh food for
too long. In order to keep the food for a
longer period, people will preserve the
food with different methods, such as
dried the food under the sun or preserved
it with salt or oil. Dried seafood, shrimp
paste and salted fish are the famous
souvenir in Tai O.
Tai O is an old fishing village in Hong
Kong, some fisherman is still living
there. They usually drive their sampan
near the pier and sell their fresh
seafood. People can buy the seafood
from the fisherman and find a
restaurant and cook it for you.
