Lesson Plans 7th Week – October 6 – October 10 Major Objectives: Writing & Writing Mechanics Students will answer comprehension questions about “Thank you, Ma’m” in complete sentences. Students will write simple and compound sentences. Students will continue to work this 6 weeks on an activity called, “Out with the Old and In with the New.” They will “toss” the following overused words and will use new vocabulary to replace them. Quiz over the words will be FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10. New words for this week are: Vocabulary Old Word: pretty good funny like walked sad New Word: stunning splendid humorous treasure bolted forlorn Students will begin working with Greek and Latin root words, prefixes, and suffixes. This week and next, we will work with the root word ped (foot). Quiz over these words will be MONDAY, OCTOBER 13. Vocabulary words using this root word are: Centipede (a creature with 100 feet) Impediment (something that stands in one’s way) Pedal (a lever that is moved with one’s foot) Peddler (a person who goes from door to door on foot trying to sell a product) Biped (a creature with two feet) Pedestrian (a person who gets around by foot) Pedicure (a foot treatment that includes soaking the feet and polishing toenails) Tripod (a three-footed stand often used to balance a camera) Millipede (a creature with 1,000 feet) Quadruped (a four-footed creature) Students will read “Thank You, Ma’m” by Langston Hughes and will work on vocabulary from the story. Test over these words will be WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15 and THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16. Students will work on analyzing the characters in the story. The will also analyze how circumstances affect people’s choices. Students will complete a plot diagram to identify the following elements in the story: Exposition Rising action Climax Falling action Resolution Learning Activities the Week of October 6, 2014 Monday: Students will test today to get baseline data of their reading skills. Tuesday: Students will learn vocabulary words: stunning, splendid, humorous, treasure, bolted, forlorn Students will list all new “ped” vocabulary words: biped, centipede, impediment, millipede, pedal, peddler, pedestrian, pedicure, quadruped, tripod Students will preview vocabulary from “Thank you, Ma’m” by Langston Hughes: circumstances, commit, consequence, contact, empathy, juvenile, maturity, salvage HOMEWORK: Crossword puzzle with the following words: stunning, splendid, humorous, treasure, bolted, forlorn Wednesday & Thursday: Students will begin reading “Thank You, Ma’m” by Langston Hughes. Students will analyze the two main characters in this story—their physical traits, thoughts, words, actions, and reactions of others. HOMEWORK: Worksheet with the following vocabulary words: biped, centipede, impediment, millipede, pedal, peddler, pedestrian, pedicure, quadruped, tripod Friday: Students will have a quiz over the following vocabulary words: Stunning, splendid, humorous, treasure, bolted, forlorn.
