Lesson Plans 6th Week – September 29-October 2, 2014 Major Objectives: Writing & Writing Mechanics Students will understand the three purposes of writing: (PIE – Persuasive, Informative, Entertaining) Students will answer questions in complete sentences after reading a short story, and will give text evidence to explain their answers using the SLAM graphic organizer. Vocabulary Students will work this 6 weeks on an activity called, “Out with the Old and In with the New.” They will “toss” the following overused words and will use new vocabulary to replace them. We continue to work on the following words: Old Word: nice saw little big walked laughed New Word: benevolent observed petite mammoth staggered chortled Reading: Students will identify non-fiction text features. Students will preview a newspaper article entitled “The World is in Their Hands” and will determine the author’s purpose for writing it. Students will look for clues about the text, including: Titles and headings showing the text’s main idea Graphic showing what subject the text deals with Photos showing whether the text discusses historical or present-day event The overall layout to see if it gives the reader clues about the type of text Students will set their purpose for reading. Students will complete a 5W-How? Chart outlining what they hope to find out in the reading selection. Students will answer questions synthesizing and analyzing similarities and differences in the 4 reading selections (“The Good Samaritan” –“The World is in Their Hands” – “Making a Difference” and “Don’t Go Gentle Into That Good Expressway.” Learning Activities the Week of September 29 , 2014 Monday: Students will review vocabulary words: benevolent, observed, petite, mammoth, staggered, chortled. Students will discuss and identify the features of non-fiction text: captions, diagrams, glossaries, graphs, headings, maps, tables, photographs, table of content, types of print, and bulleted lists. Tuesday: Students will review vocabulary words for QUIZ WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY. Students will complete the assignment identifying features of nonfiction text. Students will read “Don’t Go Gentle Into That Good Espressway,” a poem by Luis J. Rodriguez. Wednesday/ Thursday: Students will take a vocabulary quiz. Students will look over the text, pictures, and charts in “The World Is In Their Hands,” and will complete a 5W-How? Chart. Students will then read the selection and answer comprehension questions afterwards. Students will read additional information about volunteerism in an article called “Making a Difference.” Students will answer questions synthesizing and analyzing similarities and differences in the 4 reading selections (“The Good Samaritan” –“The World is in Their Hands” – “Making a Difference” and “Don’t Go Gentle Into That Good Expressway.”) Students will use the SLAM rubric to write a paragraph.
