NEW YORK UNIVERSITY THE STEINHARDT SCHOOL OF CULTURE, EDUCATION, AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS PROFESSIONS KODÁLY SUMMER INSTITUTE 2011 23RD SUMMER OF KODÁLY STUDIES AT NEW YORK UNIVERSITY • FOUNDED 1989 ENDORSED BY THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN KODÁLY EDUCATORS VOICE PEDAGOGY SYLLABUS MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY 00:30 CONTACT HOURS PER DAY • 07:30 CONTACT HOURS FOR 3 WEEKS DR. JERRY KERLIN, INSTRUCTOR CONTENT • Since the voice as part of the body is the main medium for making music in Kodály-based work, this course begins the day with a thorough body/voice warm-up. The adult focuses on her/his own voice technique and personal style towards producing an effective model for children. • A philosophy of voice pedagogy and vocal health for children, adolescents, and adults is discussed. • The student experiences the physiology of the voice and techniques of posture, respiration and breath management, phonation, resonant tone production, diction, and expression. • The student explores activities to use in the classroom appropriate for young voices toward the goal of “singing with confidence”. • Special problems in modeling the male voice for treble voices are examined. • There is a focus on uniform diction in Western choral style, especially the role of uniform vowel sounds in evaluating intonation. • The importance of phrasing, resonance, articulation, and dynamics are discussed in the evaluation of choral competence. • Negotiating traditional vocal and choral techniques in choral settings is discussed. • Choral techniques and exercises will be drawn from the work of the researchers/practitioners listed as recommended readings, especially the work of Bartle (1993, 2003), Ehmann and Haasemann (1981), Haasemann and Jordan (1991), Holt and Jordan (2008), McGill and Volk (2007), Phillips (1992/1996, 2004), and Rao (1987, 1993, 2004). ACTIVITIES • Students practice vocal exercises chosen to align posture, to assist in breath management, to exercise the registers and ranges involved in phonation, to develop resonance, to work on diction appropriate to style, and to evoke expression. • Students model exercises in class warm-ups. • Students learn rounds, canons, and other types of choral literature in which to apply vocal technique. • Students identify the ranges, registers, and tessituras of their own voices, of students with whom they will work, and as found in choral literature for study and performance. • To work on uniform pronunciation and Western choral blend, students write International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols for the text of literature studied. • Students identify and practice traditional styles of singing, both Western and non-Western.
