Words Their Way Sorting Homework Directions: Each night you have sorting homework, but it is your choice to pick which activity or activities you would like to complete. Please complete a total of six activities each week. Please be sure to: Write the date and activity name before beginning in your word study notebook. Write the “evidence” of your work. This may be writing the words for your activity or explaining how you did (“Got them all right!” “Need to practice some more.” “Missed 2.”) When you’ve finished an activity, write the day of the week in the correct week column. On Tuesdays, turn this page in with your word study notebook. Wednesday, January 27 – Tuesday, February 2P Sort Descriptions Regular Sort Sort the words using the patterns given. Write the words in your notebook in the correct columns. (All words) Blind Sort Have someone read your words aloud to you. Point to the correct header where your word belongs without seeing the word. Were you right? (All words) Speed Sort Sort your words as fast as you can three different times. Keep track of how long it takes each times and see if you can beat your time! (All words) A Word’s Worth Using the money values below, find the value of your words. (15 words) A-F = penny G-L = nickel M-S = dime T-Z = quarter Bruise Sort Complete a regular sort. Then write each word in pencil with its correct header. Circle the consonants with a blue marker or crayon. Circle the vowels with a black marker or crayon. (All words) Bubble Words Write your words using bubble letters. Don’t make them too big! (15 words) Finger Trace Have someone trace your words on your back. Can you figure out the word? (15 words) In the Spotlight! Complete a regular sort and write your words in your word study notebook. Then highlight all the vowels. (All words) Jump and Spell Do jumping jacks as you spell your words. Each time you clap say a letter to spell your word. (15 words) Memory Sort Lay your words face don. Flip over two words. If they fit the same pattern you have a match. (All words) No Peeking Exchange cards with your partner. The partner will call out the word on the card while you spell the word (aloud or on paper). If you spell it correctly, you get the card and place it in the correct column. (All words) Pendulum Words Write your words forwards, then backwards, then forwards again. (15 words) Rainbow Words Write each of your words using the colors of the rainbow. Each letter should be a different color. (15 words) SAW Words Sort-Alphabetize-Write – Sort your words. Then put each column in ABC order. Now write down your sort in your notebook. (All words) Scrabble Words Use the scrabble tiles in your notebook to determine the point total for at least 15 of your words. Write the word and the number sentence – story 1+1+1+1+4=8. (15 words) Sentence Sort Write 8 or more complete sentences using at least 10 words in your word study notebook. Underline your words. (10 words) Size Words Write your word as you would normally. Then write it as tiny as you can. Finally, write it with big letters (not too big that you take up too much room though ). (15 words) Slap Sort This is a partner activity. Pick a category as your “slap” category. Divide the cards between partners and play like Slap Jack. Spell “slap” category words correctly and keep the stack. If it is incorrect, your opponent gets the cards. (All words) Snap and Spell Snap your fingers on each letter. Clap at the end of the word. (All words) Spelling City Using the classroom webpage, log in to your Spelling City word list. Complete the “Test Me” option and then try out some of the games. (All words) Spelling Poem Using at least 10 of your spelling words, write a poem. You can add other words that follow the same pattern. (10 words) Word Hunt Use a book that you are reading and find words that fit the pattern you are using. Write them in your notebook. (15 new words) Word Pictures Draw a picture/sketch that relates to your word. Include your word in the picture. (10 words)
