The Springs are in a delicate balance at this time. Much is being done to
protect and preserve the quality of the springs. The decline of quality is being
maintained because of the many efforts from a lot of involved people in
working to protect the area, but we need to stay vigilant and diligent in our
efforts to ensure that the decline gets no worse.

5. What is your sense of the CURRENT HEALTH of the Ichetucknee springs?
The springs are deteriorating rapidly, due to many forms of human "activity"
in the spring shed (agricultural and urban yard fertilizers, excessive well
water withdrawals with inadequate permitting control by the Suwannee
River Water Management District, too many cheap septic systems,
inadequate storm water and waste management in Lake City, urban sprawl
and population explosion in Columbia County, global warming, etc.) and also
due to present park management (200,000 users a year "cap" too high, to
increase park revenues), which is determined by economic forces beyond the
park personnel control.

Without looking at chemistry data, the springs seems healthy. I think water
supply is the largest threat to the springs and every day we do not attack that
issue is inexcusable. Water chemistry has been a focus long enough and what
has been accomplished should be put on automatic and we should
concentrate on water supply.

I believe the nutrient loads are increasing and the resulting algae smothering
in the Ichetucknee and Santa Fe. My undersatnding is that there is over a

Degraded. I have seen videos of the river from past years that seem to show
the eel grass healthy and green. It is currently nearly all covered with algae.
However, the bare places in the center of the river from tubers don't seem to
be as bad as in previous years, so maybe the signs requesting users stay in
their tubes have had some benefit. The banks of the river seem very clean,
without litter, which is positive. I am unsure about the nitrate levels.

OK for now but seems to be at risk as regional ground water quality starts to
deteriorate. Algae and SAV seem to be increasing. Perhaps its popularity with
tubers and canoeists is also adding stress. Not sure agriculture is the main
culprit as long as area cities show growth and dispose their waste in ways
that can harm ground water and thence the springs. Need to continue
studies to better understand pollutant inputs.

Declining water flow and water quality. It is half the depth of water of 30
years ago along the river. The fish and wildlife are less,(crawfish, mullet,
snails) Grass on bottom is less because of the stirring of the river bottom.
Clarity of water less. I fear for the future of the river, I can envision just a
trickle of silty water, although I am not a pessimist, just feel so helpless.

It is my opinion that the quality of the river has deterioated significately since
the last flood. The river rose faster than I have ever witnessed in my 50 years
being on the river. The color of the river used to be blue and it now is green.
The greatest noteable difference has been in the last 5 years. I believe the
draw down of the aquifer has increased the phosphates and other
contaminates that are already in the system from previous years working
their way through the strata, increasing contaminate
percentages therefore effecting water quality.

Florida remains a growth state, financially dependent for much of its revenue
on tourism, agriculture, and bringing people here to live. Even though Florida
has instituted many ways to tax its citizens (state taxation is about average
for the United States), we do not have an income tax (one of six states in the
U.S. which don't). When Floridians become committed enough to our state's
excellent government functioning to institute a personal state income tax and
higher property taxes, that is when we will cease to depend on being a
growth state and start to act financially responsibly as citizens, demanding
high quality services rather than inferior government. Luckily, "Floridication"
has begun, finally, with more people moving out of the state than in for the
first time since before WWII, year before last. Thankfully expect this trend to
continue, because land prices are now lower in other parts of the Southeast,
hurricanes keep coming, and Floridians will probably never institute an
income tax.

The greatest challenges are to keep people involved without overwhelming
them. To accomplish one thing at a time, show success, then move on to the

People don't like to be told "not to do something." So, users of the Park,
Springs, etc. need to be better educated as to how their actions impact the
quality of the water and their experience in the park. Maybe find ways to
upgrade the number of staff to ensure visitor education results in people
going home as ambassadors for the park. Have your Task Force perhaps find
members who have the time to increase a proactive approach to protect
these springs and thence others as well.

10. A public opinion survey about Ichetucknee Springs restoration may be conducted in the next year. If
so, what would you like to see on this survey?
Basic research on the Ichetucknee needs to continue indefinitely (water flow,
water chemistry, biodiversity surveys), not cut back due to "lack of funds".
The Working Group must continue to educate the politicians, teachers,
farmers, developers, etc. of Columbia County that their personal behavior
patterns have already permanently impacted the Ichetucknee basin and
eventually will make it useless as a recreational "resource" and provide no
more free uncontaminated water for our use right under our feet. Park
management of the Ichetucknee still needs to improve, primarily by reducing
swimmers and tubers by around 100,000 a year. Environmental group
representatives have almost stopped coming to working group meetings,
because the agenda was so tightly controlled by Jim Stevenson, to keep
discussion at a minimum and all comments non-controversial. The agenda
must have more time for open discussion, rather than having it almost totally
a data dump, with the members not required to do anything other than
hopefully attend. The working group became a worried love in, with Jim
organizing every detail of every meeting. To be fair, the quality of these
informational sessions was always extremely high and everyone in the room
believed that we were making a difference, that everything was not hopeless.
I will miss Jim Stevenson a lot, even if he is a control freak.

What do you mean by restoration? The spring itself seems to be in good
shape. Does restoration mean what do we do in the basin to protect water
quality? We should get off this kick about how bad bottle water plants are.
They do two things, they automatically are concerned about water quality in
the surrounding landscape and 2, they put a value on water which makes it
more of a mineral which can make water more valuable.

professionals with the science and people skills. This should not be "done by
