Are you curious about one of the fastest growing racial groups in America, which includes people from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Tonga, and Samoa? Would you like to understand how Asian Pacific Americans fit into America’s larger racial landscape, and how they interact with other racial groups? Would you like to take classes from a wide variety of disciplines, including English, American Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, History, and more? If you answered YES, then you might be interested in the Asian Pacific American Studies (APAS) minor at UVA. The minor is composed of 18 credits (6 courses) drawn from an evolving list of classes in more than 8 departments. To declare in APAS, you simply need to have taken any APAS eligible course. After you apply for the minor, you will receive personalized mentorship from APAS faculty and become connected to a variety of interesting activities and resources throughout Grounds. Requirements for the Asian Pacific American Studies minor: 1 APAS survey course (AMST / ENAM 3180, ANTH 2610) 1 Theory or comparative race and ethnicity course (SOC 3410, PLPT 3020, PLPT 3030, SWAG 3810, AAS 1010, AAS 1020, AMST 2300) 1 Asian transnational / diaspora course (any course on modern East or South Asia, typically in ANTH, HIEA, HISA, EAST, SAST, CHTR, JPTR, PLIR) 3 APAS electives, one of which must be at the 4000-level (list changes every semester; usually includes Applications will be accepting on a rolling basis.
