Members absent: Carol Mason, Bill Brennan, Kathy Meddaugh, and Norma Barnhisel. Guest: Terryl Ross Meeting called to order by President Eiseman at 9:05 am. Corrections for the minutes included: 1. under the Oregon Pers Retirees, the brochure was for OPRI, not PERS. 2. Nancy Evans should be added to the list of members on the nominating committee. 3. Delete the computer program item. 4. The new engineering building is spelled Kelley, not Kelly. Minutes approved as corrected. EMERITI RECEPTION: The OSURA display board was up at the emeritis reception right next to the Academy for Lifelong Learning display. Good audience response. The board is currently stored in Ken Krane’s office and is available for use. It is large and somewhat heavy to move. The new format of the emeriti reception with key faculty reporting was well received and considered better than just administrative reports. STANDING COMMITTEES: PROGRAMS: Suggested dates for tour(s) of the new Kelley building are November 14, 15, or 16 and maybe sometime in December. The tours will be limited to 20 people. It was projected the interest might warrant two or more tours. An announcement card will be mailed to members once the date(s) are set and will also list other upcoming events. We are waiting to hear from Karla Chambers about a possible tour of Stahlbush Island Farms. To see processing, it may be too late for this year if we set a specific date so we are looking at the Fall of 2006. A theater program is project for February 17, 2006 with a reception etc. Gale Hazel and Gary Tiedeman have been named co-chairs of the proposed Talent Show. Gary suggested a pitch to get attendance other than the “excellent” talent was to use it as a fund raiser for the possible OSURA scholarship fund. Next Fall is the target time. A retirement workshop as conducted by Kathy Meddaugh is still planned. Other programs might be sporting events such as Women’s basketball with the coach hosting an informal session before the game. MEMBER SERVICES: Bill Wilkins has been asked to chair this committee. Close liaison with the faculty senate economic welfare committee is important to avoid duplication. Gary Tiedeman is currently on that committee and will discuss with them what the relationship might be. VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE: Ken would like names of non-board members to add to this committee. Kathy reports very good response to volunteer requests. FINANCE COMMITTEE: George Keller has been asked to chair this committee. There was a general discussion on the “advocacy” role of OSURA and just how this should be conducted. AOF and OPRI are already advocacy groups for faculty/staff. Our role should be more educational than advocacy. ANNUAL MEETING: There was a general discussion on where to held the next annual meeting and suggestions included the Alumni Center, the Valley Football Center, and the new Reser Stadium. Costs and availability are to be considered. It was agreed to get tentative reservations at the Alumni Center and the Valley Football Center. MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Laura reported that we had 387 members. The membership committee made the following suggestions: Membership dues: raise to $15 per person/yr Membership options: 1 to 3 year options at $15/yr Orange card: send new card each year New retirees: First year membership free “make a big fuss” The members would get the Presidents report and the research magazine mailed to them at OSURA expense. About 100 people retired last year. There are currently 6,000 alumni and 2,000 foundation members receiving these mailings. We operate on a fiscal/academic year, not a calendar year. After some discussion, it was recommended that this proposal be sent to the Finance Committee for review. Other items that were included in the discussion were that of a life membership; an option with no reduction in dues is not attractive; membership card & orange card be the same; even with a free first year membership, members should respond that they wish to be members; etc. We need a legal way to contact retirees about membership also to make sure spouses of deceased members know that they can continue membership. Because so many things are happening when people retire, it is a problem as to how to reach them and individual contact was suggested as the best method. An OSURA pin proposal was presented by Laura. The cost would be $70 for a setup mold and we could get 500 at $1.75 per pin. The board authorized the $700 to order the pins. Copies of the OSURA letterhead were passed for review. In addition business cards as discussed at the last meeting were presented. OSURA information is on the first and the officers and board members are listed on the back. A supply is available from Laura. The Orange card was discussed. A cost of $280 was presented. This would include a charge of $60 for setup, $15 for shipping and the rest for 500 cards. Only general information would be on the card and information on the discounts etc. would be on a sheet sent to members when their card is issued. The types of discount opportunities we have been discussing are much broader than was originally proposed to the board by Luanne Lawrence. It was agreed that dues would continue at $10 per year and we’d try to have the new membership/orange card available next year. Suggested new names for the OSURA newsletter: The OSURAN The Retiree The OSURA Letter The Retiree Letter OSURA New & Views OSURAviews OSURA Views OSURAvues OSURA News OSURA Retirees News Ron will be asking our preference on this change and it will be an item for the next meeting. This is Ron’s last year on the Board and he will not be seeking election to a new term. We will need a new editor for the newsletter. Ron is willing to assist the new editor. Gary was asked to be editor and he didn’t say no! A reminder that the November meeting will start at 9:00 am on Nov 21st. Our guest speaker Terryl Ross arrived and presented information on the strategic plan for diversity at OSU. Laura has copies of this plan. He discussed the a number of items including: workshops at University Day; the book club program; need for individual faculty to step up and take action; the challenge to attend and do at least one book review; challenged the board to organize a book review session; availability of him or his staff to help; the advantage of current activities already going on at OSU; the five strategic areas of the diversity plan, and more. Some follow up is expected. The meeting adjourned at 11.11 am. Respectfully submitted, Glenn Klein, Secretary
