Tosin Adebisi

Regional responsibilities: Africa and the Middle East
Tosin has responsibility for the international recruitment strategy in Africa and the Middle
East. Working collaboratively across the University, Tosin will also lead on reviewing the
University’s portfolio to attract the best partners, students and researchers to the University.
He is a graduate of Robert Gordon University and Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. He
is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and is currently studying for the CIM
Professional Diploma in Marketing. His research interests include Organisational Psychology
and Consumer Behaviour.
Tosin joined the University in 2013 from University of Portsmouth where he worked for four
years on key markets in Africa and West Asia.
Amanda Barton

Regional responsibility: Europe
Amanda is responsible for student recruitment and partnership development in Europe
focusing mainly on Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Norway, Russia,
Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey. She also leads on strategy for the development of
international scholarships at Sussex.
Prior to Sussex Amanda worked 4 years at The School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS),
University of London, leading on student recruitment in Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea,
Taiwan, Thailand, India, Pakistan and East Africa. Previously she was 10 years at the London
School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) in a variety of roles including student
recruitment in USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Kenya, jointly ran the Study
Abroad Programme for incoming American students, as well as leading on Widening
Participation with local colleges. Before working in higher education Amanda was at the
Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and Save the Children. She has lived and worked
extensively abroad including Cuba where she studied Spanish at the Universidad de la
Habana. She has a first degree from University of London and her academic interests are the
socio-economic and political development of Latin America.

Responsibilities: East and Southeast Asia
Katie leads on the International Marketing and Recruitment strategy in East and
Southeast Asia. Whilst overseeing the region as a whole, she has specific country
responsibilities in China, Vietnam and Singapore and manages the China Project
Manager based in Beijing. Katie also leads on the Customer Relationship
Management strategies for the International Office.
Katie joined the University in 2008 from the University of Portsmouth and has five
years of experience working the Middle East and West African markets.

Responsibilities: International student recruitment and Sussex Abroad programmes
Martin has overall responsibility for the University’s international marketing and
recruitment strategy. He also oversees study abroad, exchange and international staff
mobility.
Martin joined Sussex in 2011 after leading international recruitment at the University
of Roehampton for the previous five years. Martin recently completed an MBA in
Higher Education Management at the Institute of Education and has membership of
the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Responsibilities: Administration for the International Office
Katherine oversees the administration team within the International Office. The
administration supports the operational activities related to the development of the
University of Sussex’s international recruitment and partnerships. Part of the role
includes assisting International Officers with the logistics of the overseas trips.
Katherine joined Sussex in 2008, previously working in administrative roles within
both the private and public sectors. For the past 5 years she has worked as a member
of the team as a PA & Events Coordinator and was recently promoted to manage the
administration for the team as the International Office has changed its structure.

Regional responsibilities: East and Southeast Asia
As part of the East and South East Asia team, Siobhan has country responsibilities
for Thailand, South Korea and Japan.
Siobhan joined the university in 2010 from the University of Reading and she has
recruitment experience across most of Asia. Prior to joining the higher education
sector, she was an English language teacher in Japan.
She has a CIM Professional Diploma in International Marketing.

Responsibilities: East and Southeast Asia
Brían works closely with Katie Floyd (Senior International Officer – East Asia) and
Siobhan Marshall (International Officer – East Asia) putting into action the
University’s international marketing and recruitment strategy in East Asia.
Brían joined Sussex in 2010 from Waterford Institute of Technology (Ireland) where he
worked as International Marketing Officer for 5 years focusing on South Asia and
North America. He holds a Bachelor degree in Marketing Management and a Masters
in International Business from Dublin Institute of Technology. His thesis for his
Masters focused on the brand personalities of Universities. Brían is a member of the
Digital Marketing Institute of Ireland and has a keen interest in Social Media
marketing. He was the creator and project manager of the Ireland Homecoming Study
Programme which was launched by the Irish Taoiseach in Washington D.C (March
2010). He was also a Director on the board of the International Council for Overseas
Students - Ireland (2008-2010). In his spare time Brían is a musician and song writer

with published works.

Regional responsibilities: South Asia
Michael is International Officer for South Asia – specifically, India, Pakistan, Sri
Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh. He started at Sussex in January, having previously worked
for the University of Portsmouth (also covering South Asia).
Before moving into student recruitment in the Higher Education sector, Michael
worked for six years as Marketing Manager for a language school in Essex; before
that he taught English as a Foreign Language around the world.

Responsibilities: China
Amy is based in Beijing and is responsible for supporting the international team in the
development and implementation of our marketing and recruitment strategy in China.
Amy is focussed on strengthening relationships with our key recruitment agents,
institutional partners and alumni networks across China. Gathering market
intelligence is also a key part of her role.
Amy joined the team in January 2013, having gained 10 years of experience in the
sector, providing consulting service for Chinese Students planning to study in the UK.
Her experience also includes two years working for a language school in
Bournemouth.

Regional responsibilities: Africa and the Middle East
Guy is responsible for International Marketing and Recruitment for Africa and the
Middle East. As well as regular overseas trips to the region his work involves building
relationships with embassies and Cultural Attaché’s offices here in the UK. Guy
regularly hosts visits from both private sponsors and ministry representatives.
Prior to joining the University of Sussex Guy worked at the University of Southampton
and Portsmouth University gaining experience in most aspects of the student life
cycle.
Guy is currently attending recruitment exhibitions in Kenya.

Regional responsibilities: South Asia (sub-continent)
John has been a part of the International team since 2006 he leads on the
International Marketing and Recruitment strategy in South Asia (Indian subcontinent). Historically, he has worked in all the territories we actively cover except
South / Central America. Whilst overseeing the region as a whole, he has specific
country responsibilities in India and Sri Lanka.
John also leads on the digital strategies for the International Office for example virtual
exhibitions and video conference based events.

Responsibilities: Strategic partnerships (from end of February 2013)
As Assistant Head within the International Office, Victoria manages the administrative
team, and from February 2013 will work closely with academic and professional
services staff on the University’s new international partnerships strategy. With a
background in publishing in Asia, she has worked in international HE marketing for
eight years at Sussex, Portsmouth and Roehampton, overseeing recruitment from the
USA, Canada, Taiwan, Japan, China, Mexico, Malaysia and Thailand during this time.

Regional Responsibilities: The Americas
Gareth will start at Sussex in February, with responsibility for overseeing the
University’s international recruitment strategy for the Americas, with a particular
focus initially on the USA and Canada. Gareth will also lead on marketing and
communications for the International Office, including branding, web content and
international publications.
Gareth will join Sussex from the University of York, where he has spent the past three
years as International Officer, with experience recruiting from East Asia, the Middle
East, Europe and North Africa. Prior to that, he held marketing roles in local
government and at the British Council.

Responsibilities: Administration for the International Office
Beverley helps with the smooth running of the international administration within the
International team ensuring that the operational support is given when the
International Officers are travelling overseas. Her role also includes delivering our
overseas representatives commission process, organising the International Student
Ambassador Scheme, updating databases to ensure the team has accurate and up to
date information and supporting the International Administrative Officer with events
and projects that occur.
Beverley has worked at Sussex since July 2004 and has seen the International team
grow over this period, both in team numbers and the countries that the International
Officers travel to.
Marcus Williams

Responsibilities: Student Recruitment Services
Marcus is Director of Student Recruitment and International Affairs. He heads up a
team of 40 staff, encompassing 4 areas: UK student recruitment, International student
recruitment, Study Abroad and Marketing.
Prior to joining Sussex in January 2010, Marcus headed up UK student recruitment at
the University of Birmingham from 2003 – 2010 and before that had been an Assistant
Registrar and Senior International Officer at the University of Warwick from 1996 –
2003.
Marcus is a graduate of the University of Warwick, from where he received a

Bachelors in Politics and International Studies, Masters in Race and Ethnic Studies
and more recently, his MBA.
Marcus works closely with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International), Professor Chris
Marlin, and reports to the Registrar and Secretary, John Duffy.
Professor Chris Marlin
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International)
Professor Chris Marlin has been Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University
of Sussex, where he is also Professor of Software Engineering, since 2009.
Previously, he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Flinders University in South
Australia, where he had university-wide responsibility for research from 1998 to 2009.
He has also held academic positions in computer science at the University of Iowa in
the United States, and at the University of Adelaide and Flinders University in
Australia.
The principal role that Professor Marlin undertakes for the University of Sussex is
responsibility for internationalisation in all its forms. Responsibilities beyond
internationalisation include line management for four academic Schools across the
Social Sciences, and the Sussex Centre for Language Studies. He also has
responsibility for major university-wide projects ranging from a new human resources
information system to the construction of major academic facilities.

Travel between London Airports and Brighton
Travel between the London Airport that you are arriving at and the hotel in Brighton will be arranged
and paid for by Sussex. To ensure that your taxi is booked, please send your fully completed
registration form to us. Without the flight details we will be unable to book a taxi for you.
Travel between your hotel and the campus
All travel between your hotel and the University will be arranged and paid for by Sussex. A member of
staff will meet you at a designated time at MyHotel in the morning and give you your train ticket for the
day. The member of staff will walk with you from the hotel to Brighton Railway Station to catch a train
to the University’s campus.
