Genetic Disorders Brochure

A brochure on a human genetic disorder will be created such as those found in a doctor's office to give new
patients information on their newly diagnosed disorder. It should be a trifold, printed on one sheet of paper
both front and back and in color. Genetic disorders must be approved by teacher so there are no
duplications. Brochures must be submitted to TurnItIn.com for full credit – plagerism will result in
consequences from no credit for that section to “0” on the project and being referred to the administration
for cheating. You must be prepared to present this information to the class if requested.

Attractiveness / organization: Text and graphics are balanced. It should be in color
and typed. Work is creative. Title and picture on front cover is appropriate and eye
catching. No large blank spaces on brochure.
Writing / grammar - use spell check and grammar check, use proper capitalization,
use headings and separate paragraphs or bullets to make the brochure easy to read.

Other - Information follows the order below. All sections are easy to find. This rubric is
to be placed inside the brochure. Name/pd/date are on brochure easy to find on front or
back.

1. Symptoms – state symptoms of disorder, may include a picture if appropriate

2. Genetic Cause:
 Chromosome #: State which chromosome carries the gene and the mutation.

 Show a diagram of the chromosome and point out where the mutation maps.

 Diagrams or figures on mutation: Show 3 figures pertinent to the disorder.
Suggestions: Karyotype, DNA sequence, protein sequence or diagram, cell
picture, tissue picture etc. If it is not from your disorder then no points will be
given.
3. Genetic counseling: General information Is it dominant or recessive? Inherited or
spontaneous? What is the frequency of this disorder in the population?
show at least one – either a Punnett square or pedigree and predict the chance of
having offspring with the disorder. It must reflect your disorder or no points.
4. Testing – How is testing done and what sample is needed? DNA, blood, protein,
tissue, physical appearance?
5. Lifestyle – how does the lifestyle change to accommodate any physical or mental
difficulties from the genetic mutation?
6. Prognosis – what is the prediction of life expectancy and quality of life?

8. Sources - 5 or more in MLA format on back lower section. This can be in the
