Important Note:
The school reserves the right to select a minimum of two pieces of a student’s artwork per school
year to become part of its permanent art collection, which enhances the program and inspires the
students.
General Policy Statement
Students enter our magnet program through the audition process in their primary areas of interests.
Students will remain in that discipline for their three years at Johnston and will not be permitted to
leave their primary interest. Should a student wish to change their area of acceptance, he/she must
reapply and audition the following year. Students are also expected to remain in their second
magnet class throughout their time in our program unless there is sufficient (schedule conflict or
after conference with teachers change deemed necessary) reason presented to necessitate a change.
Classroom Rules






Be on task when the bell rings
You must be on time
Listen attentively and follow directions
Keep room neat and clean and respect art supplies
Be prepared and bring art supplies to class
Show respect for authority, peers and school
Supplies Needed for Classroom:



Supply Fee will cover:
 Student’s Personal
Sketchbook, Portfolio,
colored pencils, art pencils,
art erasers, sharpener, and
vinyl zipper storage case.
 General art supplies for
projects, including, but
limited to paint, specialty art
paper, brushes, etc.
1 Roll of Paper Towels
1 Box of tissue
1 bottle of Hand Sanitizer, OR Disinfectant Wipes
Grading Policy
Grades are given according to the following:
 Following directions
 Neatness and cleanliness of the assignments
 Completion of the assignments
 Discipline- respect for artwork, students and
teachers
 Turn in assignments on time

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES







Honor your commitments. Better yet, be ready to give a little extra when
needed.
Complete all assignments and homework on time.
Be prepared to give your best in class. Be attentive and ready. Have your materials
(sketchbook, pencils, erasers.) in class daily.
Do your “Fair Share” in our fundraising.
Extend courtesy toward others. Do not criticize others artistic abilities, or write on or touch
any other artwork except your own.
When away from our school, represent it with your best behavior.
Rewards: you will be proud of yourself and your art, and you will experience the sense of
achievement, which all successful artists enjoy.
REMEMBER: BE PROMPT, BE PREPARED, BE POLITE, BE SUCCESSFUL
PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Encourage and monitor your child’s art at home. Your child cannot do his/her best or reach his/her
potential without your help. Several specific areas of importance are:




Help your child be in class, on time and organized to his/her best at all functions.
Help your child plan a personal calendar, which can anticipate schedule
conflicts. Ask to
see agenda books and calendars, which are distributed in class.
Communicate with the teacher if any difficulties which arise via email.
Rewards: You will appreciate the opportunity to see your child learn in becoming a true
artist… You may be amazed to see the tremendous progress which can be made.
I have read the Fine Arts Department Handbook and agree to abide by all rules and procedures listed
therein. I understand there is a $75 art supply fee due, which is to be paid in cash or money order.
Artwork & Artist’s Release
I, the undersigned, hereby grant permission to Johnston Middle School to allow my child’s artwork,
name, photographed artwork, printed artwork, and computer graphic artwork, writing, videos, and
slide show presentations to be used in school Web site.
If selected, I also grant Johnston Middle School permission to take and use photographs of my child’s
artwork for reproduction. If selected, the artwork may be displayed with the name of the child at
events or used in publications, television, Web sites, and other multimedia presentations. Images of the
art may also be used on calendars, cards, or other products. You warrant that your child is the sole
creator and proprietor of all rights in and to the artwork and you hereby assign the copyright and all
other rights in and to the artwork to Johnston Middle School. Proceeds received in association with the
artwork will be used to support Johnston Middle School efforts to promote excellence in teaching and
learning.
