Figurative Language Log Frank, 2012 Name:___________________________ Figurative Language Log and Guidelines The Great Gatsby is full of all kinds of figurative language. While you are reading, you will keep track of the figurative language you find in this log. It will make reading the book easier to understand, it will help you with the final assignment, and you will get to practice finding examples of devices that will be on the STAAR exam. I will grade the log when I grade your KWL chart, and I will take the whole thing up at the end of the unit. I suggest gluing this log into the middle section of your notebook so you don’t lose it. When you fill up this page, there will be more pages available. If you write too big to fit in the boxes, draw the chart in your journal and title the page “Figurative Language Log.” You will be looking for any of the following: similes, metaphors, alliteration, hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, and imagery. If you forget what those devices are, refer to your notes. You need at least four examples per chapter! That’s 36 total! Once you find an example, copy it down in your log with quotations. Record the page number you found it on, and label what kind of figurative language it is. Lastly, try and decide why the author used the figurative language. What was his purpose for using it, and how did it affect you as a reader? This last question is the most important because if you can answer it, you are analyzing the literature.
