Professor John Preston, Cass School of Education and
Communities, University of East London presents:
Disaster Education:
Race, intersectionality and social justice
From ‘Protect and Survive’ in the 1970s, when British households were instructed how to build DIY shelters in the event of nuclear attack, to advice on disasters on Twitter, public education campaigns have prepared us for apocalyptic events. The arena of education, however, has always – tacitly or overtly – prioritised the survival of certain groups above others.
Drawing on examples from the UK and the US, from past and contemporary disaster education, Professor Preston will argue that, rather than seeming kitsch, such campaigns are, in fact, central to the way in which governments define survival, life and death.
In this presentation, Professor Preston draws on findings soon to be published in his forthcoming book: ‘Disaster Education’, as well as from past and current ESRC and EPSRC research projects.
