ESW Seminar Series CIRCLETS Monday 7th February, 5.30-7pm Room 104, Fulton Speaker Dr Lorella Terzi, Roehampton University, London presents: ‘The Capability Approach to Disability and Special Educational Needs’ ____________________________________ The current provision in inclusive and special education is underpinned by a tension between the aim of treating all learners the same and of treating them differently – with due attention to their individual needs. This tension is known as the ‘dilemma of difference’. In this seminar, Dr Terzi will argue that the capability approach developed by Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen - provides an innovative and important perspective for re-examining the dilemma of difference. Specifically, the approach makes possible the resolving of tension, whilst locating the debate within a normative framework of justice and equality. Dr Terzi will conclude that the concept of capability equality can add a significant ethical dimension to the contentious debate about fair educational provision for children with disabilities and special educational needs. * Tea and coffee served from 5pm ** Participants can join this seminar remotely by logging in at: https://connectpro.sussex.ac.uk/circlets.1.terzi/
