COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course presents the real number system, solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities,
polynomials, exponents and radicals, and introduction to quadratic equations. (Students who have successfully
completed one year of algebra in high school will not receive credit for MATH 118.)
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Perform arithmetic operations on real numbers, including rounding to an appropriate number of digits,
simplifying fractions, and converting to and from scientific notation.
2. Solve linear equations in one variable.
3. Graph linear equations and inequalities in two variables and calculate slopes and intercepts.
4. Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials, including factoring and solving equations using factoring.
5. Perform arithmetic operations on rational expressions and solve rational equations.
6. Apply algebraic techniques of solving equations to word problems.
