COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION
This course offers an introduction to Contra Costa College and is designed to provide ESL students with information
and a concrete plan for succeeding in college. Topics covered include educational and career goals, introduction to
student support services, the nature of second language learning, and ESL course selection.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the grading systems in U.S. Colleges.
2. Select appropriate ESL courses as a result of multiple measures, including but not limited to, ESL placement
test, and discussions with ESL faculty.
3. Develop a schedule for upcoming semesters.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the ESL certificates of completion, Contra Costa College certificates of
achievement, associate degrees, and transfer programs.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of the college programs and student support services.
6. Follow registration procedures.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of successful approaches to learning a second language.
INTENDED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Students will be able to select appropriate ESL courses for the upcoming semester.

Orientation
a. General college information, ESL certificates of completion, certificates and AA/AS degree programs, introductory
transfer information, costs and financial aid.
b. Student support services (e.g. Skills Center, ESL Computer programs, ESL Tutoring, Graded Readers, Media Lab,
EOPS, Counseling, etc.).
Educational Planning
a. Interpretation of assessment results and informed decision process.
b. Understanding and use of college catalog and schedule of classes.
c. Time management guidelines.
d. Course selection for upcoming semester
e. Registration procedures

OUTSIDE OF CLASS WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS:
Title 5, section 55002.5 establishes that a range of 48 -54hours of lecture, study, or lab work is required for one unit of credit.
For each hour of lecture, students should be required to spend an additional two hours of study outside of class to earn one
unit of credit.
