Accapadi, associate director, Central Web Services
Today
Laurie Bridges from the Valley Library and Chair of the Mobile Site Committee
spoke on “Mobile Stats Are Not Enough: What Do Mobile Library Site Users Actually
Do?” The presentation was based on research she and Hannah Gascho Rempel
collected, wrote an article on and presented at a conference in January.
Laurie’s presentation can be found at: slideshare.net/ilaurie.
Laurie said that by 2016 it is projected that 90 percent of students will own a
Smartphone. The OSU Libraries website uses Google Analytics and their mobile site
uses Urchin for site analytics.
They are currently looking at Responsive Web Design which is the need to make one
website responsive to all screen types. Laurie showed examples of Lancaster
University’s website and Dakota State University’s Library website. As she reduced
their screen size, content scaled/moved to accommodate the new size. There is a lot
of scrolling in responsive design. Laurie suggested three reasons you should know
about responsive web design: 1) Connect with your audience, 2) Stay within budget,
and 3) Get with the future.
Laurie said the library has decided not to develop a mobile web app.
The library mobile site has an average of 124 views per day.
Laurie suggested a way to test your site on multiple devices is to go to the AT&T
Store and try your site on multiple devices.
Jen said that University Relations and Marketing is working on a new online
calendar that they are hoping to launch by September.
Nancy said that there is a new university-wide draft social media policy. Colin Huber
in University Marketing is leading the project. They are asking that OSU social media
sites be submitted to the social media directory.
