Halliford School
The school was founded in 1921 as an independent grammar school on the present site.
The building closest to its road is the oldest, a tall-storied Georgian House set in six acres
beside the River Thames that was once home to Emma Hart (later Emma, Lady
Hamilton) when she lived with Charles Francis Greville before she married and then
became Lord Nelson's mistress.
There are currently around 400 pupils on roll. The school teaches boys in years 7 – 11 and since 2007 has
taken girls into sixth form. In November 2014 the school was accepted into membership of HMC. The
school has seen expansion since the year 2000 and has an impressive array of facilities including a
dedicated theatre, classroom block, technology building, multi-purpose sports hall, gymnasium and sports
pitches, both at school and on a nearby separate site. More recently the school completed the magnificent
Philip Cottam Centre which houses: Music, Art, Sixth Form Centre and Cafe and in September 2014 opened
the refurbished kitchens and dining room.
At Halliford we value individuality, celebrate diversity and encourage our pupils to have the confidence to
think for themselves, whilst emphasising the importance of tolerance, teamwork and collective
responsibility. It has a distinctive ethos based on pastoral care in its widest sense, and one which combines
hard work with relaxation, discipline with informality and tradition with innovation.
Our relatively small size contributes to the warm and friendly atmosphere where pupils feel at ease, are
encouraged to fulfil their potential and where all are equally valued. The very able are stretched and
challenged whilst the late developer is nurtured. This is possible because the staff know everyone by name
and provide individual support and encouragement to an unusually high degree. A very close relationship
also exists between the School and its parents.
As Headmaster, I believe passionately in the importance of the individual. It is my desire that every child at
Halliford is valued for his or her own sake, encouraged to develop his or her talents to the full in a
community where there are no stereotypes and where every achievement, however small, is noticed.
The following pages contain an outline role profile and person specification. Halliford Staff are a talented
and hardworking group of teachers. They have a strong commitment to the school and its pupils and I hope
that after reading this documentation you will want to apply.

Halliford School Economics and Business Department
The Halliford School Economics and Business Department currently has two full-time members of staff who
work closely together. The Department needs to appoint a part-time teacher for either September 2016 or
January 2017. Depending on the skills and expertise of the candidate they will teach some of the following:
A Level Economics, A Level Business and GCSE Business Studies. An ability to offer some KS3/4 Mathematics
would also be welcomed. The likely timetable will initially be around 25% and the days required would be
decided with the successful candidate.
One of the Economics and Business Department’s principal goals is to foster an appreciation of the subject
and to recognise its importance in understanding the modern economy. Lessons are taught in classrooms
that are equipped with access to a dedicated bank of Google Chromebooks that allow the Department to
make effective use of their excellent resources for independent project work and examination coursework.
GCSE Business Studies in a popular option taken up by about third of each year group and is taught in
smaller class sizes from 10-20. In Years 10 & 11 pupils study GCSE Business for 4 lessons per week (160
minutes) following the AQA specification that currently includes 25% controlled assessment where pupils
develop independent research skills to complete a report that analyses and evaluates a particular aspect of
a local business.
Economics and Business at A-level are both popular subjects with at least half the sixth form taking at least
one of them. The AS and A Level courses follow the new Edexcel specifications and involve teaching four
modules, currently including AS examinations in Year 12 before pupils take the three final exams at the end
of Year 12. AS and A Level Business Studies and Economics are taught for 7 lessons per week (280 minutes).
The Economics and Business Department organises regular trips and excursions throughout the year. This
year this includes a trip for GCSE students to Coca Cola’s bottling plant in greater London. A Level trips have
been made to participate in a European Student Conference. The department also organises regular trips to
Eton College to listen to visiting speakers as part of Eton’s Keynes Society and Entrepreneur Society
programme of talks and debates.
An important part of the department is promoting pupils’ enjoyment of Economics and Business. Key to this
is introducing the lower school years to enterprise skills and business challenges. This is done by running
two enterprise days in June with Years 8 and 9 as well as offering GCSE taster lessons in Business to all
forms in Year 9.
