SIMPLE PAST TENSE
We use the Simple Past Tense to talk about actions or situations in the
past. Very often the Simple Past ends in - ed.
e.g.
I enjoyed the party very much last night.
Mr. Edward died ten years ago.
When I lived in Manchester, I worked in a bank.
But many important verbs are irregular. This means that the Past simple does
not end in -ed.
e.g.
We all left the party at 11 o’clock.
Yesterday I went to London to see a friend of mine.
In the Simple Past Tense we use did/didn’t + the infinitive for questions and
negatives sentences.
e.g.
Did you have enough time to write the letter last weekend, Yudi?
I didn’t have much money to buy anything to eat today.

doing something at a certain time. The action or situation had already started
before this time but hadn’t finished.
e.g.
Tom burn his hand when he was cooking the dinner.
It was raining when we all got up this morning.
Jim was sitting and reading a book under the tree when mother called
him.
