Web Database Definition
• What is a Database?
– Shared collection of logically related data (and a description of the data)
design to meet the information needs of an organization
– Usually refer specially to the data that is stored on computers
– Database Technology is important because it allows large collection of data of
all types
• What is a Web?
– An Internet application that allows a wide range of information and services
to be stored and accessed on the Internet
– Web Technology is important because it provides a cheap and simple way to
store and access information and execute computer programas stored on
computers

• What is a Web Database?
– Systems in which both web and database technologies are used.
– Provide wider access to database system, ways of distributing systems and
more services through integration of system
– Web Database Technology is important because it enable many computers to
work together to provide solution to single and complex problems regarding
small or large collection of data of all types

– Used to publicize and disseminate information
– Benefit: distribute information in low cost and wide range and accessibility of
web
– Example:
• Academic Web Pages, such as www.binus.ac.id
• Publication of Journals and conference proceedings  scholars.google.com

• e-Commerce
– Used as electronic communication for all business processes, advertising,
initiating business deal, buying and selling, services before and after sales,
transaction between organization, financial transaction, etc.
– Can be “Business to Business”, “Business to Customer”, “Customer to
Customer”, “Business to Government”, “Customer to Government” etc.
– Benefit: to make business faster, cheaper and wider
– Example:
• Online Book Store, such as www.amazon.com
• Airplane ticket, such as www.airasia.com
• University Admission Form, such as information.binus.ac.id/daftarOnline

– Applications that support groups activities
– Benefit: to store and update information and to communicate with other
users across the Web

– No physical boundaries and geographical positions
– Information can be stored and accessed where ever and when ever
– Example:
• Ubiquity
• Commuter Worker

– Two or more organization can co-operate more closely.
– Example:
• Outsourcing, such as in India
• Just In Time Inventory, such as in Wallmart
• Credit card Checking

Eagleley EuroHotelBooking want to make service for booking
accommodation in a number of European cities. This service can be
accessed by anyone using the Web. It provide a comprenhensive
service for booking hotel accomodation and for arranging transport
between the city airports and hotels.
Should we use web database to solve the problem above? Explain the
reasons.

A jewelry store want to make a website that give information about the
company profile and new jewelry designs. The website will be
updated if there is new information and new jewelry designs. There
will be new information and new design in every six months.
