• The thesis should be in the introduction
• Get out basic facts (what you’re going to be
talking about in the essay)
• Bring the reader in
– Don’t use a cheesy attention getter
• There should be a topic or controlling idea or
thesis
• The thesis should be at the end of the
introductory paragraph

• A good introduction orients the reader.

– Give a sense of where you are (what is the setting? when?)
– Give a sense of where you are coming from (who? Identifying the
voice)
– Give a sense of where you want yourself and the audience to go
