September 7, 2007 VIA FACSIMILE Vice Chancellor Jay Hershenson Vice Chancellor of University Relations and Secretary to the Board of Trustees The City University of New York 535 East 80th Street, 4th Floor New York, NY 10021 Dear Vice Chancellor Hershenson: I am pleased to announce the following faculty and student honors and awards for Hunter College: Faculty Honors and Awards: Dr. Nicholas Freudenberg, a Distinguished Professor of Public Health at Hunter College and of Social/Personality Psychology at the Graduate Center, was awarded the 2007 Morton Deutsche Conflict Resolution Award by the American Psychological Association’s Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict and Violence. The award is in recognition of Dr. Freudenberg’s work in addressing the challenges encountered by incarcerated adolescents and adults returning to communities, as well as for his scholarly work on violence prevention. Dr. Neepa Maitra, an Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Hunter College, was named a 2007 Cottrell Scholar by Research Corporation for her proposal titled “Strong-Field Dynamics of Atoms and Molecules in TimeDependent Density Functional Theory: A Phase Space Exploration.” She will receive an award of $100,000 to further her research and teaching. Dr. Cynthia Degazon, an Associate Professor in the Nursing Department at Hunter College, was awarded a three year grant of $950,000 to continue the BEST Program (Becoming Excellent Students in Transition to Nursing), which seeks to reduce the nursing shortage and to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in the nursing profession. Dr. Degazon also won the New York-New Jersey area award for mentoring from Nursing Spectrum, a major national magazine in the nursing profession. Student Honors and Awards: Terry Madden, an All-American wrestler received a gold medal at the International Canada Cup games in Guelph, Ontario, Canada by winning the freestyle 185-pound class a few days after graduation from Hunter College. He was also named wrestler of the year by the New York State Collegiate Wrestler’s Association. Rivka Strom, an Audiology doctorate student, was awarded a $100,000 Communicative Disorders Scholarship from Setoma International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to “service to mankind.” I am extremely proud of the awards and honors achieved by these Hunter faculty and students.
