Rio Hondo College Walking For Fitness Class Syllabus Fall 2009 Instructor: Jodi Senk Hours: Monday/Wednesday 11:15-12:40 Location: Track Phone: (562) 463-7430 E-mail: jsenk@riohondo.edu Office Hours: In Fitness Center, By arrangement Course Objectives: 1. be able to identify the 5 health related fitness components 2. be able to monitor aerobic workout using pulse counts, rating of perceived exertions or talk test 3. be able to count pulse for 10 seconds using radial or carotid site 4. be able to identify components for a balanced diet 5. be able to determine how to safely achieve weight loss 6. understand benefits of aerobic training 7. be able to identify benefits to training muscular system 8. be able to identify benefits of training respiratory system 9. be able to identify benefits of training skeletal system 10. be able to identify overload, deconditioning, fatigue 11. be able to identify calorie intake affecting calorie output Student Learning Ooutcome: The student will be able to walk four laps around the track the equivalent of 1 mile within a time as specified by the America Heart Association Class Materials: 1. Closed toe shoes. 2. Comfortable walking clothes. 3. Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, optional. 4. Water bottle. 5. Towels. Guidelines: Class begins after role is taken @ 11:15am-be ready and dressed to go. Anyone showing after role is taken will be marked late. Two late classes= 1 absence! Grading: Grades will be comprised of: Attendance: Nutrition recall and program: Final exam (Wed., Dec. 11): Total possible points 50 points (10 points off for each absence) 30 points 20 points 100 points A= 90-100 and 0-1 absence B= 80-89 and 2 absences C= 70-79 and 3 absences D= 60-69 and 4 absences F= <60 and 5 absences Any student with a disability, who believes that he/she may need accommodations in this class, is encouraged to contact the Disabled Student Program and Services office as soon as possible to ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely manner. Please be aware that 5 or more absences will result in a grade or “F”, no exceptions. 4) Please let the instructor know ahead of time if you are having any problems getting to the class or medical issues that prevent you from participating. 5) No cell phones, food, candy, or sports drinks! This is a fitness class, and outside distractions prevent in obtaining benefits from the class. IF you choose to carry a cell phone for emergencies, please put it on silent or vibrate. Cell phone use during any part of class time will result in loss of points as well as me implementing the “Pizza Rule”. Academic Integrity Academic dishonesty/cheating is defined as obtaining or attempting to obtain credit for work by the use of any dishonest, deceptive, fraudulent or unauthorized means. Helping someone commit an act of academic dishonesty is fraud. If at any time it is deemed that you have cheated, disciplinary actions will be taken which can include dismissal from class, failure in the course, and expulsion from Rio Hondo College. One example is documentary falsification including forgery, altering of campus documents or records, tampering with grading procedures, fabricating assignments or altering medical excuses. Unacceptable examination behavior during written tests in class include the following: talking to another student, unauthorized materials on the desk, taking a test from the room, coping a test.
