One World Sussex 2015/16
Event Proposal / Funding Application Form
What is the difference between ‘One World Week’ and ‘One World Sussex’?
‘One World Week’ happens at Sussex in March each year and aims to celebrate the diversity of our campus
community, raise awareness of global issues, and encourage cultural understanding. Due to the success of
that week, we have extended the ‘One World’ ethos to incorporate any events and initiatives which take place
outside of the main week in March, but which still celebrate our global campus.
How can you get involved with ‘One World Sussex’?
Use the logo:
You may wish for your event to have the ‘One World Sussex’ logo on its promotional materials, so that
students and staff know that the event in some way celebrates the ‘One World’ ethos of cultural inclusivity
and awareness. Use of the ‘One World Sussex’ logo is restricted and must be permitted by both International
Student Support and the Students’ Union, so if you would like to use it for your event then please complete
the ‘Event Proposal’ section of the form below and email it to ISSOfficers@sussex.ac.uk. To clarify, you can
apply to use the logo even if you don’t want to apply for any funding.
Bid for funding:
A ‘One World’ fund of money is available to financially support the activities of staff and student
groups/societies who wish to put on an event. Whilst the majority of this fund (80%) is allocated to events and
activities which will take place during the main One World Week in March, the remainder (20%) is available to
support events which take place during the rest of the year, but which still promote the ‘One World’ ethos.
You may bid for up to a maximum of £400 for each event.
If you would like to bid for funding, please complete BOTH the ‘Event Proposal’ section and the ‘Funding
Application’ section of the following form, then email the whole document to ISSOfficers@sussex.ac.uk.
Please see the conditions of receiving funding at the very end of this document.

Section 2: Funding Application
Each application will be considered against the ‘One World Sussex’ aims and criteria by
representatives from both the University and the Students’ Union. If granted, the Fund will be used
to pay invoices or to refund upon receiving appropriate receipts. If the approved activity does not
require all of the allocated funding then the surplus grant will be returned to the One World Sussex
Fund.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible to receive One World Sussex funding the applicant must meet the following
criteria:
1. The proposed project/activity/initiative must be open and accessible to all (staff and
students) at the University of Sussex
2. The proposed project/activity/initiative must be for the benefit of the University of Sussex
community (students and staff)
3. The proposed project/activity/initiative should aim to do at least one of the following:
i.
celebrate international diversity
ii.
promote understanding of global issues
4. The applicant must be applying for something specific and have researched specific costs
and obtained quotes where relevant
5. The timing of the proposed project/activity/initiative should be such that it would be
impossible to schedule it as part of One World Week (14-20 March 2016)
If you are a Sports Club or Society applying for the fund you must meet the following additional
criteria:
 Be an active sports club or society
i.e. hold regular events/meetings/training; regularly communicate with the Students’ Union;
regularly fundraise and/or take part in community events; demonstrate a willingness to
continue developing the club/society
Generally you can apply for anything that will help the event/activity to run effectively. This could
include equipment, publicity materials, speaker expenses, affiliation fees, etc. The maximum amount
that can be awarded is £400 per event/activity.
Due to the joint nature of the One World Fund there are some restrictions on what the Students'
Union will approve funding for. Below are a few key areas we will not be able to offer financial
support for.
Examples of events/activities the One World Fund will not support


Subsidising charity fundraising (you can still fundraise, but you need to cover the costs from
money raised or from other funds which are not affiliated with the Students’ Union)
Donating Students’ Union affiliated money to other charities
Please turn over


Campaigns not directly related to our members as students. It is valid to use Students’ Union
affiliated funds to run a campaign on non-student issues provided it is educational and run
for/promoted within the campus community e.g. an on-campus event raising awareness
about climate change in the student body. It would not be permissible to use Students’
Union affiliated funds to promote this campaign to non-students outside the campus
community
Funding/subsidising flights within Europe(this goes against the Students’ Union
Environmental Policy)
