1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department.
The Storage Area Network Engineer assists in the administration of Windows platform servers in a team
environment. The individual is responsible for managing the Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure,
providing routine technical administrative support for servers, developing computer scripts and
applications, and document procedures and server configuration information. The position is part of the
Campus Information Systems department, reporting to the Server Manager.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job.
50% - Manage Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure - responsible for:
 Operational infrastructure, which requires planning, installation, testing and maintaining
system storage arrays
 Maintaining and improving strict technical standards as they relate to performance and
availability
 Serving as technical lead for project implementation
 Driving technical site escalations to conclusion
 Providing leadership examples to junior staff members
30% - Provide routine technical administrative support for servers in the assigned area to include
assisting in the installation of software, updates and security patches, administering backups,
providing user support as needed, and monitoring system performance and log files
10% - Develop computer scripts and applications to facilitate both end user and system administration
tasks
10% - Document procedures and server configuration information
3. Describe how the decisions and judgments made by this position and the results of work
performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole.
Providing effective and timely server administration is essential to the smooth functioning of every
department in the university and is critical to faculty and student success. This position supports core
administrative systems. Judgments, decisions and performance effect success of web, SQL server
(Nevada News, Raiser’s Edge, Maximo), Exchange e-mail, and over 4,000,000 data storage files. The
incumbent needs to communicate and think clearly in times of urgency, to handle pressure situations and
still keep the process within the educational realm. Effective analysis and problem solving skills are
crucial in this position.

Knowledge:
 Knowledge of storage area networking concepts
 Knowledge of Dell/EMC implementation strategies for SANS

Faculty, staff and occasionally students to provide technical consultation for solving software
problems and for technology planning
Work with campus administrators in problem solving and technology planning.
Work with hardware and software vendors to design, implement, maintain, and enhance SANS.

Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution
b. Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education necessary for a person entering this position.
Bachelor’s Degree and four years or Master’s Degree and two years of experience as a
system administrator supporting Windows platform servers in a networked environment to
include experience with TCP/IP, fiber optic network switches, SANS technology and
network infrastructure
