Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Specialist, Multimedia Production, provides creative input, development, and support regarding the design and production of film, video, graphic, digital, multimedia, interactive media, and photographic projects that support the goals of the University. The position serves as a consultant, trainer, and advisor for campus clients seeking to utilize instructional technology, such as interactive digital media, digital imaging, and digital video technology for research, instructional, and outreach applications. The Specialist acts as a production manager and advisor and therefore must be fluent with the theory and practice of new media applications. These positions report to the Director, Digital Media Technology. Specific duties may be assigned as follows: Dynamic Media Lab – Guide and assist students, faculty, and staff in the development and distribution of multimedia projects produced in the Dynamic Media Lab Interactive Digital Media – Work with students, faculty, and staff to determine the appropriate utilization of interactive digital media, including the design and production of graphics and animations Event Media Technology – Assist campus entities in the planning, design, and support of live media elements used as part of University events Additional Digital Media Projects – Consult with and assist students, faculty, and staff with the development of multimedia projects, with an emphasis on video 2. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 40% - Digital Media Projects Develop, plan, and produce a variety of research, instructional, outreach, and promitional dynamic media projects utilizing a vareity of digital media technolgoies, tecniques, and elements (film, audio, video, graphics, animation, etc.) Consult with faculty, staff, and students to develop concepts, determine location(s) and related logistics, schedule a production crew, write project treatment and scripts, and develop a production budget and shooting schedule with an empahsis on video Perform location and studio video shoots including setting up lighting, audio/visual recording systems, and coordination of production crew, talent, and location personnel Create appropriate graphics, animations, still images, and other audio/visual elements Oversight and performance of nonlinear digital editing activities Post-production activities utilizing high-level authrioring programs to include video editing and audio mixing (utilizing Dreamweaver, Go Live, Director, Flash, Adobe Photoshop, etc.) Document and production of major university activities and events for historical archival and promotional purposes Assist faculty, staff, and students with the formatting, optimization, duplication, and distribution of digital media for a variety of target distribution modes (WebCampus, streaming media, internet, CD/DVD, print, etc.) Collaborate with the production team to determine the highest quality and most effective production approaches relative to each project Position Description – Specialist, Multimedia Production Page 3 40% - Unit Specific Support (for each area assigned) Dynamic Media Lab Assist students, faculty, and staff with the development of multimedia projects created and produced in the Dynamic Media Lab Advise students, faculty, and staff on media production technologies and techniques Perform general maintenance and installation of Dynamic Media Lab hardware and software, work with IT staff when necessary Provide training for the use of digital media equipment available for check-out and use through small group or one-on-one consultations Oversee Dynamic Media Lab student workers to ensure lab specific duties are being carried out Plan and teach Dynamic Media Lab user workshops Interactive Digital Media Develop and teach classes and workshops on digital media production Provide individualized, project based training designed to fulfill specific research, outreach, or educational goals Develop and produce support materials for grant and funding proposals Post and maintain finished web sites on University web servers Event Media Technology In collaboration with the Event Media Technology Coordinator, consult with campus clients to assess an event’s media technology requirements Assist with the day-to-day technology needs for campus events, programs, and presentations Set up, break down, run, and troubleshoot technical devices including, but not limited to: video, sound and lighting systems, projectors, and computers Monitor and produce audio/visual media technology elements during events Procure, maintain, adjust, and repair related equipment Additional Digital Media Projects As previously established 10% - @One Support and Service Support efforts to publicize @One, Dynamic Media Lab, and Digital Media Technology services and accomplishments Provide assistance for reporting and assessment activities Assists with the development, creation, and updating of @One Digital Media web pages, pamphlets, digital displays, and other informational products 10% - Other Duties as Assigned Work with Knowledge Center staff to develop policies and procedures for @One and Digital Media Technology resources and services Serve on University and work unit committees and participate in departmental and unit meetings Fulfil other duties as assigned 3. Level of Freedom: The Media Production Specialist has the authority and responsibility to make decisions that contribute to the effective utilization of digital media tools, techniques, and end products. With occasional Position Description – Specialist, Multimedia Production Page 4 consultation with the Director, the position has the autonomy to determine design elements, appropriate software, and make creative decisions and recommendations about media projects to students, faculty, and staff to guide their projects. Positions involved with Events Media Technology will work in coordination with the Coordinator, Event Media Technology to meet with potential event clients, determine needs, create action plans, and make decisions as to the best technology and methods used to implement plans and produce events. The position may be the sole representative for trouble shooting problems at an event, and thus must make decisions autonomously and quickly. Impact: Decisions have a direct impact on the Knowledge Center and the University’s image, while affecting the perception and credibility of the Multimedia Production and @One units. Poor decisions and performance negatively impact the ability of students, faculty, and staff to maximize the use of media and technology and to successfully complete projects and class assignments that depend on these operations. Decisions leading to excellent service contribute to teaching and learning and promote student success and retention. Positions involved with Events Media Technology have an impact on the success and effectiveness of events, including those hosted by the Offices of the President and the Provost. Thus, they have a direct impact on the University’s image within the Nevada System of Higher Education, the community, the alumni and donor base, and constituencies within state and local governments. 4.
