Description: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force
frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary
work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

The Specialist, Illustration and Media Production, supports faculty and administrative staff in the
design, illustration and production of digital imaging products supporting the College of
Cooperative Extension and the University’s core missions of instruction, research, and outreach.
Materials generated will be incorporated into web sites, local media, Cooperative Extension
publications including grant funded publications and projects, and other educational outreach
materials and products. The position reports to the Extension Educator in Mineral County in the
Northern area of the College of Cooperative Extension.

60% - Digital Imaging and Illustration for Publications
 Consults with students, faculty, and staff to determine the appropriate utilization of digital
photography and illustration to fulfill instructional or outreach goals
 Assists faculty and administrative clients with photographic needs for use in local media,
books, magazines, brochures, newsletters and other publications
 Develops and produces support materials (such as maps, diagrams, and modeling) for
grant and funding proposals
 Produces component elements for interactive projects such as web-based and illustrated
materials and other social media
 Works with project teams to identify marketing, branding, and the design of outreach
projects based on project team consensus
 Supplies illustrations and images to Cooperative Extension program teams in agriculture
and natural resources and helps to coordinate other program educational materials
needed/funded
 Researches printing and production options with vendor representatives for the project
teams

 Creates original and creative design to illustrate and improve outreach effectiveness
 Provides digital image and illustration manipulation and assistance in working with
printing
 Creates advertisements for outreach programs
 Assists with video imaging based on illustrations
 Works directly with project teams to discover creative ways to assist in overall
educational outreach efforts and branding of Cooperative Extension programs
3. Describe the types of decisions the position(s) makes independently as part of the core

The Specialist has the authority and responsibility to make production decisions related to digital
imaging and illustration of products. Composition, appropriate illustration, and production
methodologies, for example, are decisions that have great impact on the success and ultimate
effectiveness of an outreach program. These decisions have a direct impact on the University’s
image as well, while affecting the perception and credibility of Cooperative Extension. Specific
decisions are related to adhering to integrated marketing protocols while meeting scope of work
detailed in grant projects.
 Illustrative decisions that represent the mission of the University of Nevada, Reno while
meeting grant scope of work requirements.
 Managing and decision making related to printer quality versus cost of printing
 Illustrating decision making related to policy involved with American Indians and
Agriculture Producers related to area maps and GIS
 Final decision maker of printers and other contract hires on illustration and graphic
design involved in grant projects. .
4. Describe the types of problems, issues, action, communications this position typically
takes to the supervisor for resolution and/or consultation. Provide examples. If a line of
progression, describe the supervisory consultation at the highest level.
The Specialist consults with the supervisor on overall direction and priority of projects. All grant
funded projects have collaborative teams. This position must be able to work with all
collaborators and make final recommendations related to public relations, illustrations, other
media work to the supervisor or project leader and be a main decision maker in processes and
protocols to accomplish the scope of work. For example, the Hopi People of the Land involved
the University of Arizona, the Hopi Tribe, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and
USDA, Western Sustainable Research and Education. This position will work to bring all
viewpoints together to create final illustration of written work, because the tribe would not allow
photos, into a final publication for educational activities that is approved by all parties and
adheres to an academic peer-review process.
